I earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in History from UC-Berkeley and UCLA and was a National Merit Scholar. I have five years of experience teaching and tutoring high school social studies and writing skills, seven years of experience teaching and tutoring SAT Math, Reading, and Writing/Language sections, and deep knowledge of teaching elementary and middle grades reading skills including English language learning and reading intervention.

When I started teaching high school social studies, I saw that some of my students already knew how to do college-preparatory work, while others had not learned some needed skills. I had great success when I integrated those skills (such as outlining and writing an essay, studying for a test, or taking effective notes) into my teaching. I also taught SAT preparation courses in the evenings, and learned straightforward techniques to help students boost their scores. These all require student effort, and as a parent, sports coach, and former teacher, I have empathy for students, but won’t back down when it come to helping them reach their goals.

I also edited and wrote books for students in special education, reading intervention, and English learning settings. I know how to teach phonics, vocabulary, reading fluency, and writing skills to students developing at-level or in need of intervention or English instruction, and can recommend materials and activities families can use together to support literacy growth. I found that successful instruction requires teaching at a level that is just difficult enough to require effort, but not difficult enough to build frustration. Let me know if you’d like to work with me. I’ll respond quickly to your questions, and ask for a 24-hour notice if possible regarding schedule changes.
