About Phil

I strongly value creative work and value helping others acquire and hone the skills and knowledge that will enhance their own creativity. Java Programming and Music Theory are two such skills in which I have professional experience.

I have a B.A. in Music from the University of California, Berkeley, and have composed for many media: dance, drama, film and video, as well as the classical stage. I am a composing/performing member of the San Francisco Composers Chamber Orchestra. Three of my chamber music compositions have been recorded and released on commercially available CDs. I also work as a musical proof-reader, and have self-published nine chamber music arrangements and original compositions. While at UCB, I took classes on Hearing, and on Sensory Information Processing, as well as individual study topics, and worked as a Lab Asst. the Hearing Lab, giving me a unique perspective on the cognitive underpinnings of music theory.

On the programming side, I have taken classes in Computer Science at UC Berkeley and via continuing education through the community college system. I've completed two online segments of JavaRanch's "CattleDrive" course (Fundamentals, Classes and Objects) . I earned a Microsoft Professional Certification (1990's), and more recently earned a Java 7 Associate Certification (October 2016). I worked professionally as a game programmer (1980's), and currently split my time with a database contract for UCSF Medical Center (VBA/Microsoft Access), with the development of audio-related tools and assets for game programming (e.g., author of the AudioCue class for Java sound), and a contract position as SR VR/AR Developer for Rogue Reality (primarily Javascript/CSS/AFrame). I have 9 years experience programming in Java and have coded, among other things, a virtual Theremin, a real-time FM synthesizer and assorted sound-scaping tools. I have helped many people with their Java-related questions at StackOverflow (top 12%, over 3000 points) and Java-gaming.org (8th or 9th on their "Most Awesome" list). A tutorial I wrote on "Beginning JavaFX Game Programming" has had over 100,000 hits.

Whether you are focused on overcoming a conceptual hurdle, passing a test or course, or you wish to use the knowledge gained as a creative tool going forward, I'd like to help you achieve your goals!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Java

I am an Oracle Certified Java SE7 Associate (earned Fall, 2016). I have been working full or part time as a programmer since the 1980's, using various languages and platforms. Most recently, I've been developing Java-based audio tools and assets for gaming. I'm a frequent contributor on StackOverflow (top 12%, over 3000 points), Java-Gaming.org (10th on "Most Awesome") list, and an author of Java tutorials ("Beginning JavaFX Game Programming for Java Programmers" has had over 100,000 hits).

Music Theory

I have a degree in Music from the University of California, Berkeley. I am an active member of the San Francisco Composers Chamber Orchestra, a cooperative where composers write and perform each other's works, twice a year. For that group, I both perform on oboe and compose. I am a registered composer and publisher with ASCAP and have had several chamber works recorded and released on commercially available CD's. In addition to having a solid understanding and skill with classical music theory, I have studied other genres and traditions: jazz theory, blues/rock (Blue Bear School of Music courses), classical Indian music (Ali Akbar Khan College of Music), Indonesian Gamelan and African Drumming (UC Berkeley Ethnomusicology performance courses), and engaged in the study of Hearing and Perception (Lab Asst work study job in the Hearing Lab at UCB's Tolman Hall, as well as coursework and individual study projects at UCB). From all this, I have gained and can share valuable insights into the principles that underlie Music Theory that can help the student make better sense of why this or that "rule" exists and is important.

Actually teaches rather than just give answers

Phil helped my daughter with a Java assignment. He was very patient and acted as a guide rather than just supplying answers. His hours were flexible and fit with my daughter's schedule.
