About Rebecca

I am a lover of learning and believe that engaging lessons can inspire a student to pursue the mastery of their interests! As a teacher of preK-8th grade students in a low-income public school in the Bay Area of California, I love that the art of teaching involves seeing students' unique learning styles and interests, and creating lessons that engage those intrinsic motivators.

Years of teaching English Language Learners in the United States and Costa Rica have helped me become highly skilled and experienced in developing and delivering dynamic lessons to elementary, middle, and high school students and adults using multiple modalities for diverse learners.

My aim is to challenge students to reach their growth potential, while being mindful not to overwhelm them. I assign homework each session and provide progress reports monthly.

The beauty of tutoring is that it creates a potent opportunity for me to get to know my student one-on-one, and therefore be better equipped to serve the unique needs, goals, and passions of the student. In this way, we both get to share and cultivate our curiosity and love of learning!

As a graduate of one of the most highly acclaimed Journalism and Mass Communication undergraduate programs in the United States, I am highly skilled in critical writing for public consumption, proofreading/copyediting, incorporating succinct vocabulary, and ensuring that proper grammar and source citing are implemented.
I have lived in Costa Rica teaching English to beginner, intermediate, and advanced students aged 10 - 65, having completed the TESOL certification to teach English as a Second Language.
I have also served as copyeditor for a diverse range of publications, including history reference books and a mathematics textbook.

I am most often available for tutoring from 5pm-9pm Monday-Friday and 11:30-3:30pm Saturday-Sunday. I am happy to travel to students or connect online. My rate is $75/hour for in-person tutoring and $45/hour for online tutoring. If you're interested in an extended package of sessions, I'm happy to offer a discount! Please don't hesitate to message me with questions.

May you feel supported in your journey as a lifelong learner!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I currently work full-time as a preK-8 yoga and mindfulness teacher in a public school in East Palo Alto, CA, as part of a study conducted by the Stanford Medical School Early Life Stress and Pediatric Anxiety Program.
The purpose of this program is to teach self-regulation and focusing techniques to children with high levels of ADHD, trauma, and post-traumatic stress.

In 3 years of the program, we are finding that the self-regulation techniques (movement, breathing techniques, mindful rest) are having an impact on sleep habits, emotional regulation, and ability to focus on tasks for a longer period.

English

I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a BA in Journalism, News-Editorial Sequence. Currently, I teach 8th Grade Advanced English Grammar at a public school in East Palo Alto, CA.

Yoga

I am a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga Teacher with over 500 hours of trainings in yoga asana, philosophy, and therapy. I have 4 years experience teaching yoga to adults and 3 years experience teaching yoga to children preK-8th grade. I currently work full-time as a yoga and mindfulness teacher at a preK-8 public school in East Palo Alto, California, as part of a Stanford Medical School research study on the effects of yoga and mindfulness on the cortisol (stress) levels and brain development of youth.
