About Kathlyn

I was eleven when I put down the book I was reading and announced, out loud to an empty room: "I can do better than this!" Over the next 18 years, I wrote. I studied writing, I took classes in high school and college to study and strengthen my craft, and I wrote. I workshopped with writers like Ursula LeGuin and David Gerrold, and at age 29, I sold my first novel to HarperCollins UK.

I now have three published titles under five separate covers on two continents as a HarperCollins author, in both the US and the UK.

I have also studied Technical Communication with The Society for Technical Communication in San Francisco, CA, achieving a 100% in the Master Writer course.

I began my Graphic Design studies in 2003 by accident: I took a Photoshop class because it sounded like fun, and the next thing I knew, I had taken all of the courses for a degree in Graphic Design and gotten straight A’s in every class!

Suddenly, I was a graphic designer with awards for poster art and packaging design and my own small business! I live daily in Illustrator and InDesign, and hop back and forth into Photoshop with ease. I love keyboard shortcuts, guides and the zoom tool, and I love communicating my enthusiasm for these software programs through teaching.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Thanks!
Kathy

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Illustrator

I live in Illustrator! I spend 4-6 hours a day in Illustrator and it's my favorite software program! I've used Illustrator to create award winning poster art, and the artwork for countless enamel lapel pins traded by everyone from Disneyphiles to Olympic sports enthusiasts. I processed the artwork for the Presidential Situation Room pin, and the Autism Speaks puzzle piece. Best of all, what I know, I can teach, and I love sharing tips and tricks with new people because I always learn new things myself.

Adobe InDesign

I've been using InDesign since it started life as AppleText! I know this program inside and out, and teaching/learning it is a snap! InDesign is a layout program: the container into which graphics created in Illustrator and Photoshop come to life as an integral part of books, pamphlets and brochures. Any multi-page document will need to be created in InDesign, and having control over your text and graphic elements, while not difficult, requires careful set-up and application. I love this program, and I would love to teach it to you!

Graphic Design

I have been a freelance and in-house graphic design professional for 10 plus years. I have an AA in graphic design and have won awards for poster art and package design. I am fluent in Adobe CS Illustrator and InDesign and extremely competent in Photoshop. I'm a patient teacher, full of tips and tricks, and I'm as eager to learn new things as I am to share what I know.

Handwriting

To teach proper letter, word and sentence formation, I use rote practice combined with short writing projects that incorporate the learner's interests to keep him or her engaged in the process.

Reading

I was the annoying kid in reading circle that everyone had to wait for, not because I was stumbling and mumbling through my turn, but because I'd already read the whole book while waiting to read my sentence aloud. I wasn't paying attention anymore, I was daydreaming while the other kids stumbled and mumbled through their sentences. Then when it was my turn, I had to scramble and be told where to find my sentence, read it off quick and go back to my daydream. I don't remember not being able to read, and I've had a lifelong love affair with books.

I am also a technical writer and published author. I've studied good writing all my life, so I can help you learn to read critically and really get the complexity of the text.

Vocabulary

Whether you're writing or speaking, you need words! The more words you have, the stronger your vocabulary is. A larger vocabulary makes for more expressive writing and speaking, and the right word choice can make the difference between saying what you mean, and being misunderstood!

I'm a published author, and as such, words are my tools, and I love them! New words are some of my favorite discoveries, and I'm learning new words all the time. Let me help you learn new words, too!

Writing

I began writing when I was in middle school. I fell in love with the written word very early, and despite having no examples of writers in my life, somehow I extrapolated the concept of authorship, and hotly pursued it from then on. I actively sought composition and writing classes, learning the mechanics of good writing, and I read everything I could get my hands on, applying what I'd learned to what I was reading to assess it, editing in my head as I went to correct and strengthen text and prose.

In this way, I discovered the difference between good writing and weak, good storytelling and GREAT storytelling, and how to improve any writing, because nothing is sacred! Everything could use a good edit!!

I have also done years of business writing and have certificates in technical writing from The Society of Technical Communication in San Francisco, CA. I understand the different ways that words go together to communicate, regardless of the format. I can teach you to write, and I can strengthen and broaden your existing skills.
