I have been teaching ESL, TOEFL and Cambridge Proficiency for almost 30 years, both in the US and abroad. I taught in central Italy from 1985 to 2005. While there, I did translating as well as work on all aspects of ESL: reading comprehension, speaking, and writing. I taught at the University of Pisa, for the Italian Military School for Officers, and many private schools in the region of Umbria. Since returning to the USA in 2005 and relocating to the East Bay Area, I have taught ESL at Mills College, and at Intrax, San Francisco (2005 to 2013) where I focused on Test Prep courses: PBT (Paper Based TOEFL) and iBT (Internet Based TOEFL).
I am also a published poet and serious watercolor painter. My sixth poetry collection, "Upheaval", was one of three national winners in the Red Ochre Press Chapbook Contest for 2012. I have also had individual poems awarded three times in the BAPC (Berkeley Bay Area Poets Coalition) Annual Contest, in 2010, 2011, and 2013. While in Italy, I was one of a group of artists selected by the Art Critic, Luciano Lepri, to participate in exhibitions organized by him. We exhibited in Sienna, Rome, Perugia and in small towns in central Italy.
I belong to the Frank Bette Art Center, and this Spring will offer a course in poetry development and writing, as well as an Italian language course at the Art Center. I am also moderator of a monthly poetry & prose meetup in Alameda. I have been teaching ESL, TOEFL and Cambridge Proficiency for almost 30 years, both in the US and abroad. I taught in central Italy from 1985 to 2005. While there, I did translating as well as work on all aspects of ESL: reading comprehension, speaking, and writing. Janet is one of the most professional person that I have been ever seen. Thank you Janet for your kindly support.
She's very thorough and moves at my pace, not her own. I've had approx 7 lessons with Janet. I have not learned to really say anything yet AND I feel great about it because I finally feel like I'm really understanding the concepts and building the knowledge base I'll need to speak, read, write, and understand it when it's time.
I've done conversational Italian before via college large classes x3, text books independently, handbooks/pocket books, YouTube, and tutorials - nothing worked. With her, I feel like I'm getting it, and she provides the perfect amount of encouragement and positive feedback to keep me motivated when I start to worry i'm not doing well. She is also VERY good at correcting my pronunciation or errors when needed (I WANT her to do that). She's great.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have an MA in Art History from the University of Pittsburgh, lived in central Italy for more than 20 years, and made regular visits to Florence and Rome to visit their museums and admire the cities in general. I am also an accomplished watercolor painter and have participated in numerous exhibits in central Italy and here in the East Bay Area, San Francisco. I am also a member of the Frank Bette Center for the Arts in Alameda, and will teach two courses at the center this spring.
I was an Academic Adviser for the University of Pittsburgh for eight years (1972 - 1980), which required a thorough knowledge of academic and non-requirements to successfully complete the students' four years at university. I also worked with numerous students while teaching in Italy (1985 - 2005) who were interested in studying abroad for either their first degree or MA, PhD or post-doc. I helped them prepare their admission statement and person essay. I have also advised ESL students who studied with me at an ESL school in San Francisco (2005 - 2013) with similar requests.
