About Mary Cait

I am a 23-year-old recent graduate from the University of California, Santa Cruz, looking to help students of all ages improve their writing, spelling, grammar, and other English language skills.

English was always my strongest subject from grade school through high school, and I firmly believe that strong writing skills are essential to a person’s success, no matter what field he or she ultimately goes into. I am a stickler when it comes to grammar and syntax, and I believe that has gotten me far not only in my writing, but in all aspects of life.

I graduated in 3.25 years from UCSC with a Bachelor of Arts in Theater Arts. This major was very heavy on writing, and the University has very high standards for writing.

As a tutor, I will strive to tap into each individual student’s own knowledge before consulting outside sources. I will help you or your child set goals in writing, and then we will figure out the best, most efficient, and most fun way to reach those goals. I think asking lots of questions is crucial to learning, so I not only encourage a student to ask questions, but I will also ask many questions of each student in order to make sure things are absolutely clear. I am a firm believer in memorization as a learning tool, but not just those mindless memorization “tricks.” I will teach my students in such a way that they will truly understand the material, and be able to use their newfound language skills for years to come.

I am an excellent proofreader and editor, and I would love to proofread yours or your child’s assignments. I am happy to read and edit college admissions essays as well! I see proofreading as another teaching tool, so I will always include the writer in the process.

I am also available for SAT or ACT prep, as I excelled in both tests’ Writing and Critical Reading portions.

I look forward to speaking with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I have been acting since I was very young, and this has made me a very qualified public speaker. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Theater Arts from UC Santa Cruz. Along the way, I have picked up many tricks and tips to help with memorization as well as to help calm nerves and handle stage fright issues.

Theatre

I have a B.A. in Theater Arts from UC Santa Cruz. I have been acting since I was six years old. I am experienced in many other areas of the theater as well.
