About Jennabeth

I have masters degrees in English (Composition) and Education (Reading emphasis). I have experience tutoring from elementary through college. I taught basic skills courses at the community college level and a first-year college composition class. As a writing coach, I have worked with masters and doctoral level students on their theses and dissertations. I have facilitated APA workshops and tutored on citing in APA format.

Working with students, I have seen their writing improve, their ability to recognize their error patterns, and their ability to edit their writing. Completing a PhD in the Humanities (2016), I am cognizant of the challenges of the academic environment. I offer support and encouragement, as well as tools to assist with those challenges.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I would discuss what your needs are, what English skills you want to learn. In the process of this, I would assess where you are with your English. We could then map out what we might work on in the time we have. The plan would be something about which we both agreed.

MCAT

The MCAT Writing Sample asks you to apply critical thinking skills, the ability to analyze and explain an issue or argument. You will asked to state your position and explain your rationale. Applying rhetorical strategies (analyzing the argument or issue, choosing your thesis and the assertions you will make, etc.) while paying attention to logical fallacies are all factors in addressing this requirement.

I have successfully completed writing samples for college entrance and for teaching certification. I am currently a writing coach for professional students. Additionally, I have assisted students with their personal statements, comprehensive exams, and edited theses and dissertations.

Proofreading

My focus in proofing is making certain that the writing expresses what the writer intends and responds to the question or issue posed. As a writing coach, I assist students with personal statements, editing/proofing comprehensive exams and dissertations, including correcting and verifying in-text citations and references.

Psychology

Having tutored and assisted psychology students as a writing coach, I have become more familiar with the field, its theorists, and theories. I have also my own reading experience to draw upon. I am fascinated by this subject and enjoy engaging with students on its various topics.

Reading

Reading is an essential skill that can be mastered by acquiring the skills that improve comprehension and meaning. Questioning, monitoring comprehension, applying background knowledge, making connections to the text, and identifying the main idea are strategies that, once learned, will increase the student's confidence in her/himself as a reader.

Writing

Together we would assess previous written assignments and analyze what the problems are having. Rewriting exercises using previous essays can help in recognizing and correcting mistakes. This practice would be applied and developed as a new skill for current and future writing.
