About Genevieve

I'm a native English speaker and have been teaching since 2009. I enjoy helping students learn. Learning can be fun. My goal is to make my lessons as engaging as possible. My knowledge of other languages helps me understand the challenges learners face. I am able to explain the differences in grammar between languages so that students can understand. I teach English to non native English speakers as well as teach Spanish to native English speakers.

English/ESL Teaching Experience:

My English teaching experience includes teaching writing to college students, both native and non native English speakers as well as middle school students. I recently taught developmental writing at California State University East Bay. I currently work at a private language school where I help business professionals improve their English language skills, primarily in speaking, pronunciation and grammar.

I've taught English oral fluency, pronunciation, speaking and listening to Italian high school students. I taught ESL/English conversation, grammar, reading and writing to individuals and small groups.

I have worked with adult immigrants from a variety of countries, including Japan, Korea, Belarus, China, Nepal, Eritrea, Iraq, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Mongolia, Belgium, Mexico and countries in Central and South America. The lessons focused on improving their conversational fluency, listening, reading and writing skills.

ESL/English for Specific Purposes:

I've taught English for specific purposes to adults in a variety of fields (childcare, real estate, manufacturing, software, dental, education, medical, food service, property management). I also taught career skills like interviewing. In addition, I've taught native Spanish speakers English using both English and Spanish depending on their English language proficiency.

Spanish Language Teaching:

My Spanish language teaching experience includes teaching Spanish to adults, middle school and high school students, focusing on conversation, grammar and vocabulary. I also taught Spanish to middle school students at a private school in the East Bay.

I work collaboratively with my students to create fun, engaging lessons customized to meet their learning goals. I incorporate role playing, games, mnemonics, and technology to facilitate learning.

After working together one-on-one, many of my students have been able to improve their grades.

I have a TESOL certificate from California State University East Bay and a B.A. in Foreign Languages from Lewis and Clark College. I'm a member of several professional organizations such as TESOL and CATESOL and ESL International. I am currently finishing my master's degree in English, specializing in TESOL.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have completed the coursework for my master's degree in English, specializing in TESOL. I'm in the process of completing my thesis.
I also have a TESOL Certificate from California State University East Bay. The program consisted of coursework and a teaching practicum at Piedmont Hills High School, where I taught ELD students.

My areas of knowledge include teaching speaking, listening, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, oral fluency, reading and writing.

Grammar

My friends nicknamed me the Grammar Queen because I understand and can explain English grammar in an understandable way.

My former coworkers put me in charge of reviewing their marketing materials to make sure they were grammatically correct and without errors.

Proofreading

In my everyday life, I always seem to find the typos in written material.

I have completed the coursework for my Master's degree in English. In addition, I taught writing to college students at CSUEB.

In my previous positions working for Fortune 500 companies, I reviewed the marketing materials before they went out to make sure there weren't any errors.

Reading

I worked as a volunteer for Alameda Reads teaching adult immigrants to read. I took a morphology class which discussed how prefixes, stems and suffixes are combined to create words.

Spanish

I have a B.A. in Foreign Languages, with Spanish as my primary language. I taught Spanish to middle school students at a private school in the East Bay. I have tutored high school students one on one in beginning through intermediate Spanish for the past five years.

Writing

I taught writing to both native and non-native English speakers at the university level. I regularly attend seminars and workshops for my professional development.
