About Darlene

I grew up in upstate New York among the Adirondack Mountains with a mom and dad, two brothers and one sister. The outdoors was my breath and where I spent most of my time. My two brothers taught me the art of car repair as well as hunting, fishing, and trapping. After graduating high school, I earned an associates of applied science from a community college. Entering the US Army was my next adventure, where I served along the east coast and Egypt. Though this was my life dream, life situations cause me to leave the Army. Alabama became my home and where I returned to school to earn my teaching degrees. Our family moved to Florida where I taught 5th graders for two years.

Moving to Vermont brought me to four and five year olds and getting them ready for Kindergarten. Next came four years of teaching fourth graders in South Carolina. It was during this time I earned my masters in education.

Finally, I had found the way to truly teach children, how each learns. My next experience was here in Yuma, AZ, were I taught 4th grade for two years and 3rd grade for five years. Though by now I had 15 years of teaching under my belt, I knew in my heart, there was something else for me. Which brings me to this point in my life...tutoring.

Outside of school, I am a person with many interests and dreams. My husband and I own 72 acres in the middle of no where, with nothing around us. We are creating a homestead were we will be self-sufficient, by raising a variety of animals and growing a large garden. My hobbies include sewing my own clothes and quilts, trying to crochet and knit, filling a home with houseplants, cooking and baking, (as well as eating),. In addition I make jewelry, learning woodburning, welding, and many other skills. Writing with an quill pen and journalism are things I do to relax my soul each morning.

I do look forward to meeting each and every child and parent. By working together we will build strong learners.

I love math and teaching children it is not terrifying is fun to watch. By teaching each child the way he/she learns allows him/her to be able to enjoy the process of learning, even when learning is difficult. Using hands on, projects, and discovery, children begin saying amazing things about math.

I have taught common core standards for five years and have learned how to read and interrupt their meaning. Being able to see the progression from Kinder through eighth grade, I see a natural progression that allows a child to build his/her knowledge step by step.

I have taught elementary school for 15 years, with a variety of students from all walks of life. Each are unique and special, but all able to learn. Professional development through school districts and on my own have allowed me many skills to assist children.

I am willing to help you learn, jump the hurdle (difficulty), to get where you want to be. Let's meet and then you decide if we can work together.
