I have taught for 26 years at the middle school, upper school, and college mathematics level. I have taught in both public and private schools. I believe in team work and have encouraged students to work together to grasp concepts being explored. Understanding is the key, not memorization or rote learning. Reading is also essential for success in math. I have always found that the better the math student, the better the reader. the quality of the math performed is more relevant than the quantity. A few problems may be all it takes for the student to grasp the the how and the why.
Students learn in different manners. Not all students can sit and understand what is being described. Over the years tactile learning seems to be the best avenue for students to learn. Writing the information down, not just saying. If the multiplication tables are difficult for the students to learn, then I have them write their facts down. When teaching I always included examples where the students had to work with me to do the work, not just lectures. Though I have taught for 26 years, I actively tutored for over 11 years.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
