If you want to learn English without memorizing boring rules or rote memorization, I'm the teacher for you! I've been a certified teacher in Arizona for 30 years but have taught students from North America, Central America, South America, Africa, Europe, and Asia how to be better speakers of English. I love teaching ESL because it allows me to do three of my favorite things - teach, travel, and talk to people. I recently returned to the United States after living in northern Iraq for 7 years, and yes, I have stories to tell.
While in Iraq I started an English language program for college freshmen, only to return the second year to teach a class for their professors. After that, some locals convinced me that it would be easier to teach preschoolers to speak English, but as they grew older, I started an elementary school, then a middle and high school to go along with it. While doing all of this, I had a TOEFL preparation institute in the evenings (this was my only paying job...) where I helped university graduates prepare to pass the TOEFL so that they could go out of the country to study for a master's degree. Along this long road of teaching English to non-speakers, I filled my "bag of tricks" and have a lot to offer students of any age and educational level. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Part of preparing students to take the TOEFL exam involves public speaking techniques. ALL of my students say that they are much more comfortable while speaking in public, both in their target language and in their native language. After returning from many overseas trips, I have been asked to speak publicly to many groups. The feedback I have received says that I'm an engaging and interesting public speaker.
Master's degree in Bilingual Multicultural Education with a specialty in ESL/TOEFL. I had my own TOEFL preparation institute in Iraq for 7 years and helped 90% of my students pass the TOEFL on their first attempt.
