Grand Canyon University (Bachelor of Music)
University of Phoenix (Master's)
My name is Mr. H. I am currently a General Music Teacher Specialist at a K-5 Elementary School in AZ. This year will be my eighth year teaching music. Previously, I taught three years at a K-3 Elementary School in the Glendale Elementary School District (AZ), three years at a K-5 Elementary School in the Fowler Elementary School District (AZ) and one year at a PreK-4 Elementary School in the Harrisonburg City Public Schools District (VA). I have earned two degrees in the field of teaching. My first degree is a Bachelor of Music degree from Grand Canyon University (2001), and my second degree is a Masters Degree in Elementary Education (2008).
In a public school setting, I have taught 5th Grade After School Band, 5th Grade Strings Class, 4th Grade After School Recorder and In-class grade level choir (K-5). I have also taught individual students as well as a small class environment. Individually, I have taught Bass Guitar, Guitar, Drums, and Recorder. In a class setting of 10 students, I have taught Guitar. In all of my music classes I have an Objective for every lesson, so we all know what our goal is for that lesson and make sure we obtain that goal before the end of class. All of my music classes are based off of the National and State Standards for Music.
Academically, my teaching/tutoring experience has been in Reading, Writing and Math. This experience has come through the public school system which is titled "Intervention." My Intervention classes have been small groups (6-8 students) to this year's Math Intervention class with 17 students. The grade levels I have taught Reading, Writing and Math Intervention in are 3rd - 5th Grade. My Intervention classes have been between 40 - 50 minutes each, three days a week for the whole school year. Previously, the Intervention classes were aligned to the State Standards. Now, they are aligned to the Common Core Standards.
In an individual setting, I am able to work with a student one-on-one finding out his/her strengths and weaknesses. Whether it is Music or Academics, once the weakness is pinpointed, we can focus in that area to bring the student up to where they need to be, "Meeting" or "Exceeding" the Standards.
Whether your goal is Musical or Academic, I look forward in helping to meet your goal and "Exceeding" all possible dreams!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified for teaching drums because I have a Bachelor of Music degree. Part of that degree included an elective class that I took on percussion so I could teach drums. I also played drums in a semi-professional group for three years. I play drums on Sundays at three different churches when needed.
I am qualified to tutor in this specific subject because I have a Masters in Elementary Education. I have subbed for most elementary classroom teachers and have taught Reading, Writing and Math Interventions for grades 3-5. My methods will be to find out where the student needs help. I will ask open-ended questions so the student will be able to find the answer which will help the student maintain the answer. I will summarize our time together making sure the student understands all we have gone over and feels confident with the lesson.
