I have tutored for many years, while my children were in school, and more extensively since then. It has been very rewarding for me to see children, who have been having difficulty reading or understanding and computing math problems, excel under my tutoring. I thoroughly enjoy working with children and have a passion for helping those who are struggling. It is an invigorating challenge to study each child, to be able to identify where his or her skill gaps are and then to discover an effective way of targeting those skill gaps. I use what I have learned are the most current effective means and materials to zoom in and aid students enabling them to learn and progress quickly ("Phonics for Reading", Archer, Lapp, Flood and Lungren and "Break Away to Math Success", Down, as well as supplemental materials). Each tutoring time I monitor how well the student is progressing from the last session. I work rigorously with each child, but also include humor and flexibility when needed. I also use specific incentives to inspire each student encouraging them often and praising every accomplishment. All of my students have enjoyed their tutoring sessions and many never wanted them to end. I strongly believe learning should and can be exciting and fun. Students are tested orally and in writing at least once a month using Dibels, teacher generated quizzes, and/or The Diagnostic and Placement Math Test for the appropriate grade level. All of my students have made noticeable progress and most went beyond what was anticipated of them. My supervisors started giving me first choice for open positions, after my first four months of tutoring, because my students were so happy and made the most progress. Many boys and girls I tutored had become discouraged thinking they could not accomplish what was expected of them, and it is difficult to describe in words the great joy I've felt when I see their faces light up as they achieve the unexpected!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I tutored reading in my home, grades K-12 for 15 years. I also tutored reading in seven school districts in Arizona, under Ahead of the Class and Dysart Unified School District grades K-8 for 4 years.
