Tough problem in homework? New topic doesn't make sense? Forgetting early stuff before a big exam? Fifth grade, high school, college, it doesn't matter. If you WANT TO KNOW, I can help you learn it.
If you are blocked by a topic, I can diagnose the roadblock and direct you around it. We proceed from what you DO know by adding the new and unfamiliar steps to solve the problem you face. When we're done, you will have solved several similar problems. If I see that your challenge stems from not being clear on earlier material, I'll work you on that first. For example, some high school algebra students are slowed down by not knowing fifth grade multiplication tables. On the other hand, if I see that you know how to perform the processes (long division, square roots, trigonometry identities, for example), but find that "word problems" are sometimes a mystery, I'll coach you in figuring out an approach to the problem and seeing how to apply the processes that you already know.
My background: I was good in math in high school (A in AP Calculus) and university (BS in Math, Stat, and Computer Science). Also good in languages (MA in Linguistics). After my MS in Computer Science, I've worked as a computer programmer, computer scientist, software project leader, and business analyst in the years since. My tasks in business have always included speaking to people who are unsure about the details (such as math, computer science, operating systems, etc.), and giving clear explanations of whatever they need. This means that I know how to explain to a student who doesn't understand, for example, how to factor an algebraic expression. I was a teaching assistant in Computer Science in grad school, I've trained customer personnel in complex software systems, and I've tutored my grandchildren in various math topics from arithmetic through precalculus.
I am a troubleshooter. I can figure out what's in your way, and I can explain it to you. Then I can make up more problems like it, and make sure that you have learned it. My math background guarantees that I know the material; my training and management background ensure that I can teach it to you.
