“How can you not understand?” “…And you can figure out the rest for yourself” “What’s there to be confused about?” “It’s obvious that…”—Have you ever been told any of these in your class? I’ve heard these complaints from students time and time again. While completing my undergraduate work at the University of Arizona in Tucson—where I’m majoring in physics, mathematics, and business administration—I’ve tried to help as many other students as possible. I’m incredibly passionate about these subjects and love to help others improve their understanding. Though learning the raw facts may be nice, I prefer to focus on understanding the deeper ideas within a subject: where did this come from?, why do this instead of that?, what is the reason for having that? I am very calm and patient, and truly believe in the improvement of my students, not in simply repeating material when the student is already confused.

I have many years tutoring in each of physics, mathematics, and business. With a year’s experience in our schools CATS Academics tutoring service, I’ve helped many athletes from a variety of backgrounds boost their grades, understanding, and confidence. I also have two semesters’ experience as a registered preceptor in introductory physics courses. The first was holding office hours in an education emphasis classroom. The second was working in close collaboration with student groups during recitations to offer extra aid. Beyond these opportunities, I have tutored my peers for several years. It is very fulfilling. I love helping students not only improve their work, but to help them to see the subjects in a better light and to understand a little bit more about the world. A great plus is that tutoring deepens my own understanding and gives me new perspective as well. Math and science are not just about arcane rules and mysterious shortcuts. There is a clear and beautiful reasoning behind all of it.
Unfortunately, most of the time classes are so fast-paced that these reasons are never covered—leaving you in the dark. You don’t learn why you do this, so you have to guess about how to do that.

I have personally mastered subjects from elementary algebra to more advanced mathematics for my own studies. In the past, I have worked with students who are just entering math to those who are majoring in the subject. I also have special experience aiding students in preparing for math placement exams. My history includes: elementary algebra, calculus I & II, basic arithmetic, vector calculus, ordinary differential equations, introductory statistics, linear algebra, introduction to proof, and more specialized advanced subjects. Personally, I am a very calm and patient person who likes to teach on why the math works in a certain way, never saying “it just works that way.”

Message me today! We can begin with begin with tutoring right away or we can simply chat so you can see that I’m the tutor for you! I want to hear from you and help you as soon as possible. No matter your level or skill, I can help you. I want to know what your problems are and how I can empower you to do your best.

My programming experience includes statistical methods in C, Python, and R.

Elementary Education

Elementary Math

Elementary Math

As a senior in math and physics, I have a wide range of abilities and experience. I am a patient, calm tutor that has years of experience helping students, athletes, peers, and friends. Whether you need help with practice or some basic techniques, or some deeper, underlying reason behind all the work, you will find the help you need with me.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have completed coursework from introductory math to more advanced work. I have specific experience tutoring students in preliminary college placement exams and preparation for our university's introductory courses.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have several years' skill with explaining the basic ideas behind the mathematical facts of algebra 2, where many students struggle. I have much practice explaining why we handle things like polynomials or probability in a certain way. I also have expertise in more advanced mathematics that serves to give a stronger explanation of tricky questions.
Calculus,

Calculus

I have several years of experience tutoring calculus to class mates and students; this includes pre-calculus, Calc I and II, and vector calculus. In addition to the material itself, I also have some experience with real analysis, which is the underlying subject that rigorously provides calculus with its methods.
Geometry,

Geometry

I have strong experience for geometry; I also have a strong passion for it. I can help students with introductory high school synthetic geometry (with postulates and proofs) and with analytic geometry (equations and graphs). But I also have more advanced experience with some non-euclidean geometry, and an understanding of the geometry of space-time used in special relativity.
Physics,

Physics

I have broad experience with both tutoring physics and the material itself. With years tutoring, I have helped classmates, friends, and students formally and casually. This includes algebra- and calculus-based physics for non-majors, and rigorous advanced subjects from classical mechanics to quantum mechanics, as well as many ancillary topics (such as particle physics and solid-state physics).
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I have several years' experience clarifying basic algebraic for students from a variety of backgrounds. I understand that a student's understanding is not based on abstract mathematical facts, but on the student's being able to connect to the material. I can translate ideas and word problems into mathematical language. I also have practice showing the underlying ideas that makes sense, rather than just relying on a stale list of rules.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Precalculus as a subject is a bridge that connects algebra to calculus itself. I have several years tutoring both subjects and can show how students can better adjust from one to the other. In addition to being able to clearly explain the algebraic concepts, I support students in understanding the more formal math that is required for derivatives, integrals, and advanced manipulations.

Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

I have completed courses in introductory linear algebra through my undergraduate curriculum and have studied more advanced linear algebra (relying more on proofs through pure mathematics). In addition, I understand the Abstract Algebra underpinning the subject and have practiced linear algebra through non-relativistic quantum mechanics.
Logic,

Logic

I have take courses in prepositional and predicate logic, have completed a course in mathematical proofs and have takes several programming classes. In my spare time, I have also begun to teach myself modal logic, as it seems to lend an interesting extension to logic as it relates to both philosophy and math. I have also tutored several peers in logic, especially as relates to the proofs course.

I owe my A in Physics to Luis!

Luis is undoubtedly the best tutor I've ever had (and I've had several). He was very knowledgeable and he clearly has a great understanding of all the concepts addressed in my physics class as well as the mathematics involved. He was able to explain these confusing concepts in a way that I could comprehend and he helped me to develop a step-by-step method that enabled me to solve problems successfully. Often I would initially be confused about what a problem was asking me to do or about how to begin a problem, and Luis was always able to help me understand and, in the end, succeed. Would DEFINITELY recommend Luis!

High School Physics Tutor

In the year that Luis has been my son’s science tutor, we have observed that he has been one of the most responsive teachers we have had the pleasure of working with. Regardless of the form of communication: emails, phone calls, or texting, Luis answered our questions quickly, with little or no delay. My High School son’s academic growth has been outstanding, with significant gains in those areas taught by him. Above all, Luis has demonstrated a willingness to adapt his teaching style and redesign lessons in order to meet my son’s needs and make the information easier to digest. Bravo, Luis!

Really good at what he does!

I was struggling in a stats class that I really couldn't have passed without Luis' help. I understood more in one week of tutoring than I did in an entire semester by my professor. Luis was respectful and prompt. He was online exactly when he said he would, every time and was well prepared to answer any questions I had. Highly recommended!

Couldn't Have Passed the Class Without Him!

This semester I was taking a 5 week long Differential Equations course. It was extremely fast paced and I haven't had Calculus in over two years so I was rusty on my skills. I asked Luis to help me with this class and I honestly don't think I would have passed without him. We met about twice a week (sometimes more, sometimes less) and reviewed problems and concepts. He was always extremely patient and always ensured that I truly understood the topic we were covering. He was extremely knowledgeable in the subject and was able to explain things better to me than even my Professor did. Luis was able to be flexible with my schedule which was very appreciated because of my busy lifestyle. He was so easy to work with and I recommend him to anyone looking for an excellent math tutor. Thanks for all of your help this semester, Luis!!
