About Mario

I have experience as a long term substitute teacher for Tucson Unified School District in Tucson, Arizona for 11 years in all subjects. I have taught in most of the middle and high schools in Tucson. Most recently I taught special education math at Catalina High School 2014-2015 school year. I taught high school math and Spanish at Canyon Rose Academy 2015-2016 for 1 1/2 years.

I am able to establish an excellent rapport with students so that you feel comfortable learning in a one to one tutoring atmosphere.

I have taught Elementary and Special Education Math, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and some Pre Calculus. I am currently studying to take the Arizona Secondary Highly Qualified Test for teachers. My favorite subjects are Algebra and Geometry.

I have passed the 16 unit level of Spanish at the University of Arizona and have taken literature courses in Spanish. I was lucky to grow up speaking Spanish at home. I took four years of Spanish at Salpointe Catholic High School.

My endeavor is to prepare students become proficient in Mathematics and Spanish so that you can become qualified to graduate from High School and be able to excel at the University level. Math can be intimidating, but I can make your learning experience fun and less cumbersome, so that you can become enthusiastic about learning!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have 11 years experience as a teacher t Tucson Unified School District teaching all subjects. My last year and half I taught Special Education Math and Guitar/Band at Catalina Magnet High School. I also taught High School Math and Spanish at Canyon Rose Academy in Tucson for a year and a half. This assignment included much one on one mentoring and tutoring. I incorporate strategic tutoring developing a learning plan so as to develop independent learning.

Elementary Math

I have 11 years experience as a teacher for Tucson Unified School District teaching all subjects. My last year and half I taught Special Education Math and Guitar/Band at Catalina Magnet High School. I also taught High School Math and Spanish at Canyon Rose Academy in Tucson for a year and a half.
Many students have problems with not only the multiplication and division of numbers, but with the understanding of integers on the number line. For example, what is the difference between (-9)+ (-10) and -9-(-10). Does your student understand the order of operations? These two subjects are essential building blocks in developing important math skills. I would be able to determine what level in math your student is at and how and where to proceed.

English

I have taken English courses at the University of Arizona that contributed to my expertise in this subject. Major American Authors and American Writers are two of the major courses I enjoyed taking. I also have read books pertaining to Social Psychology, Social History, and Social Economics.

Geometry

What kind of angles do two parallel lines bisected by a straight line form? Which angles are equal? How do you determine what the measurement of the exterior and interior angles of a regular polygon are? What are the ratio of the sides of a 30-60-90 and a 45-45-90 triangle? How do apply the sine and cosine to determine the measurement of the sides and angles of a triangle given either a side and two angles, or two angles and side? These are just some of the exciting questions that are answered when exploring Geometry.

Grammar

I still have my Macmillan Handbook of English from my grade school years. I wrote for the High School Newspaper. After reading many a book and writing endless reports, I have reached a high level of expertise in the art of writing and using grammar. I taught many an English class in Tucson, Arizona after graduating in Liberal Arts from the U of A.

Prealgebra

I have taught Math at Mansfeld Middle School for 1 semester, 1 year Special Education Math at Catalina Magnet High School in the Tucson Unified School District. I taught High School Math at Canyon Rose Middle School most recently for 1.5 years. Math is my favorite subject.

Reading

Having taken Liberal Arts, I usually read one book per week for each subject. This would include The American Novel, Social History, Social Psychology and American Authors. Literature, Language and the Social Sciences required extensive reading for the General Studies Major. I also took a course in speed reading.

Spanish

I have taught Spanish for over 1.5 years at Mansfeld Middle School and English Second Language ESL at Tucson High School for 1 year in the Tucson Unified School District. My background is learning Spanish at home, taking 4 years of Spanish at Salpointe Catholic High School, passing the 16 unit level proficiency test at the University of Arizona and taking 1 year of Spanish literature at the U of A. I was recently teaching Spanish and Math at Canyon Rose Academy for 1.5 years. I am here to help.

Vocabulary

I have been exposed to higher levels of vocabulary having read much literature in high school and college. Reading three or four books per week while in Liberal Arts exposes you to a wide range of vocabulary. I scored 100% in Wyzant's vocabulary test. I suggest everyone read Don Quixote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra to stimulate and expand the vocabulary cells of your brain.
