I am a long-time instructor and historical archaeologist with an anthropological perspective on U.S. and European History and related subjects, including World Prehistory and Geography. My emphasis is not on the memorization of facts and dates, but on the trends and currents of history with focus on cultural development and key events as reflected in material culture, the arts, as well as government and societal interactions.

Typically, my instructional technique is participatory and informed by both required curricular objectives and student interest. History, especially culture history, is best taught with emphasis on an understanding of the building blocks of the societal, cultural and environmental factors affecting people in the past.

I seek to develop an understanding of events in the past by focusing on the context of the times in question. This happens by creating an particular interest in viewing past events and trends using an anthropological perspective to better understand past cultures and traditional historical interpretation.

As a long-time Historic Archaeologist who formerly served as the Executive Director of the Arizona Historical Society and was responsible for the development, curation and interpretation of more than 25 major historical exhibitions, I offer an extensive background in historical interpretation and education, as well as a unique perspective on U.S., European and World History via the interpretation of artifactual materials and cultural trait analysis.

I love tutoring because -- as a lifelong learner myself -- I find historical interpretation to be a fascinating and ever-changing kaleidoscope that informs my student's knowledge of the contexts in which historical figures and societies acted, evolved and changed. Helping others to enjoy History and to gain a better understanding and appreciation for its study is simply icing on the cake!

Study Skills

Study Skills

Since finishing both BA & MA degrees at the University of Arizona in Anthropology, I have been successfully instructing others for years with special emphasis on my students developing their note taking, outlining, reading comprehension, research and data extraction skills. Often, specific study skills are identified as needing strengthening as part of the self-assessment component that I use when first meeting my students. Development of good study skills is important regardless of academic subject, but especially in the case of High School AP classes since traditional instruction at the college level seldom includes study skill assessment, practice observation and/or targeted enhancement of student skills. I strive to be sure that my students have the skill set that they will need to ensure long-term academic success.

Anthropology,

Anthropology

I have taught anthropological and related topics at the university, high school and middle school level for many years, both as part of formal curricula and informally to tour groups and other interested parties. These educational events occurred in a variety of settings including classrooms, while visiting prehistoric and historic sites, and online. My specialties include all four major disciplines of anthropology: archaeology, sociocultural anthropology, physical anthropology (zooarchaeology) and US-Mexico border linguistics. My Anthropological fieldwork has included the University of Arizona Garbage Project as well as the University of Arizona Archaeological Field School at Grasshopper Pueblo on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation.
Social Studies,

Social Studies

My educational background and international field work in anthropology include a wide range of topics in the social sciences. For example, I have designed, operationalized and implemented regional oral history projects as well as multiple museum exhibitions organized around international geo-historical, anthropological and natural history-related subjects. Over the years, I have traveled widely in Western Europe and Mesoamerica and have lectured on Mayan, Aztec and Western Mexican prehistoric cultures, while also working in Colonial Period zoo archaeological and ethnographic projects at Colonial Williamsburg and Yorktown, Virginia. Other projects have required a thoroughgoing knowledge of foreign cultures and life ways, as well as considerable experience in land use analysis and environmental research issues.
