About Andrew

Tutoring has been a great way for me to pass on the knowledge I've gained over a long career, as a way to pay forward the time and patience of my mentors, especially my HS chemistry teacher. Her guidance led me to major in chemistry as an undergraduate and go on to a career as an analytical chemist.

I've spent time teaching adult learners at one of my previous positions (as part of their new hire training) and have spent many hours helping my own children and their friends with science and math. Two of my children have also gone on to play trombone in their Middle School bands.

I have been an analytical chemist for over 25 years, specializing in GC and GCMS analysis of organic compounds, so I'll be able to help with general chemistry questions or any of the major chemical specialties (organic, inorganic, analytical). I would be able to help with other science subjects, but am most comfortable with Chemistry.

Since completing my MBA in 2015, I have been working on starting my own marketing consulting firm operating in the greater Tucson, AZ area. I've also helped a friend from high school with the early steps of advertising his new business (America's Best Cargo Lines, LLC.).

I have been playing trumpet and trombone for over 40 years. Ideally I would be able to help elementary/beginner and intermediate level students of those instruments. For those students who are a little more advanced on trombone, I can help them transition from a standard student straight horn to a larger bore trigger horn (i.e. - Tenor with F valve, Bass Trombone).

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

As a professional Chemist, I've needed to be prepared and competent in many of the higher math disciplines, especially algebra.

Algebra 2

As a professional Chemist, I've needed to be prepared and competent in many of the higher math disciplines, especially algebra.

Chemistry

BS in Chemistry; 25+ years as a Chemist (mainly analytical).

Geometry

Geometry...the first and noblest of sciences. It's how the ancients built their most impressive edifices and how modern engineers, architects, and operative Masons build today. As a scientist (and Freemason), I have a lot of that knowledge of the ancients to pass on to you, the student.

Marketing

Beside my science background, I have also successfully completed an MBA with a focus in Marketing. This degree was from the University of Arizona Eller College of Management. My GPA was a 3.7 out of 4.0

Microsoft Excel

I am an intermediate to expert level user of Excel with real strength in the Data sorting functions from my two years performing data validation as a Project chemist. Everything I would need to check the data quality of laboratory results was at my fingertips in an Excel spreadsheet and I could sort it down to a single result. I've also had a lot of experience with the functions on the Formulas tab, especially the statistical functions.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Between presentations for work and those I needed for class when I was pursuing my MBA, I've created more than a few slide decks, all of them guaranteed to wow the audience. The thing to remember is to not read your slide deck verbatim and have only the most important items actually on screen. I'm an intermediate level user of PowerPoint and can help you get beyond the basics.

Microsoft Word

Besides writing business reports and correspondence at work, I'm also an amateur author, so I know my way around a Word Doc. I've had one short piece published in Pima Community College's 'Sandscript' literary annual and looking to get longer pieces published as well. All that work is done in Microsoft Word and I would consider myself to be high intermediate skill level with the program.

Organic Chemistry

I have a Bachelors degree in Chemistry and consider Organic to be my strongest discipline within the general subject. Although I did not pursue a graduate degree in chemistry, I did take a handful of graduate level organic synthesis courses as an undergraduate. As a professional chemist, I have over twenty years experience analyzing samples for trace level of organic compounds, mostly those regulated by the EPA.
