Universidad de Navarra - Pamplona, Spain (PhD)
I grew up in Tucson Arizona and went to undergraduate school in Berkeley, Ca. I worked in computers for nearly 12 years in Tucson after graduating. Later I went to Spain and studied for a PhD. As a result both my Spanish and computers skills are very strong.
I work easily with my students and most are very impressed by my professionalism and friendly manner. Looking forward to working with you!
I lived in Spain for nine years, and as a result my Spanish skills are extremely high. My Spanish is educated, my vocabulary is extensive and my grammar is impeccable. I speak Castilian Spanish but am familiar with other dialects, in particular those from Mexico and Argentina, and can teach to those if requested.
Java: I have been programming computers since 1983. I have been programming Java since the language came out in version 1.0, and attended the second ever JavaOne conference. My experience is with Java SE, and am updated to Java 8. Particular experience with GUI applications employing Swing.
Python: My Python experience is extensive, and I have programmed a number of sophisticated applications, some of which are hosted on GitHub. I have a good familiarity with the extensive Python library, and can work with multithreaded applications.
UNIX: I have a strong background in operating systems in the Unix family. I began with Linux in 1997 (RedHat 4.2, Linux Kernel 2.2) and later graduated to FreeBSD 4.2. I am familiar with all the underlying system administration tools of the two operating systems, as well as with such subsystems as firewall setup and security policy.
I worked in video production in the later 1990s and early 2000s, producing videos for the University of Arizona. My primary focus was editing, and I first learned Panasonic video editors and later Adobe Premiere. I am familiar with the various video and tape formats, the use of effects, CG and sound editing. I also have experience working with Lightwave 3D.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked with Python for many years, first experiencing the language in the Zope online programming environment. More recently I have relied on Python for a number of complex programs, largely due to Python's large library and easy threading. I can tutor the development of small and medium sized applications, as well as basic syntax and code construction. Python also makes an excellent language to use for an introduction to Object Oriented programming, if the student seeks that level of study.
I have worked with Unix-family operating systems since 1997, beginning first with RedHat Linux 4.2 (Linux kernel 2.2) and later moved to FreeBSD 4.2. I am familiar with the standard system administration tools, the firewall system(s), daemon administration, security policy, software compilation and installation, user policy administration and disk drive management, as well as the initial installation of a Unix/Linux system. I am also proficient in the use of the X window system and the various desktop environments, although I do not normally tutor in these areas.
I have worked for 7 years in the editing of videos for distribution to the educational marketplace. My experience is primarily in Adobe Premiere. I am familiar with the basic use of the Premiere interface for the development of the project timeline, with the specification of effects, CG and sound parameters. I am also familiar with the basic elements of the video production system, including the use of cameras, mics, lighting, cabling, sound mixing and power supplies. On the editing side, I have worked with the standard tape formats, as well as sound editing environments. Finally, I have used the Lightwave 3D environment to generate 3D animations for inclusion in videos.
