Bio

I love math, and I want to help more people love it - or at least be less afraid of it! When you understand math, you can make better decisions. You are less likely to get ripped off. And, especially important for young people, more careers, better futures, are open to you. Mastering math gives you power.

And, especially important for young people, more careers, better futures, are open to you. Mastering math gives you power.

I've tutored math through Mathnasium and have done plenty of freelance tutoring over the years. I have not helped everyone, but I've helped many.

Despite majoring in English, I am also a qualified actuary (FCAS, a mathematician for an insurance company). This means that I am capable in most high school mathematics subjects (algebra, geometry, trig), a lot of statistics, and some actuarial science.

The sooner we can get together, the sooner we can solve those problems. Please contact me.

Actuarial Science

Actuarial Science

I am a fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society. I also currently create study manuals for the Actuarial Bookstore (I used to work for ACTEX, but the two have merged). However, I can only really help people learn the casualty side of the industry and not life, pension or health.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have tutored Algebra I many years and have had the satisfaction of watching students move from struggling to mastery. Working with variables causes many students to freeze at first, but with a little patience and practice, they can solve these problems. By learning good habits and certain techniques (such as the usefulness of 1 in disguise) students develop a way to approach all math problems - which will give them confidence in Algebra I and higher levels.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have tutored for years. I especially love the challenge of helping kids with high school math. It's easy to get unnerved by the variables and new concepts, but with a little extra practice students usually do well.
Geometry,

Geometry

Shapes, formulas and proofs - these can all be intimidating for students - but with patient instruction and a little more practice, they can master Geometry. I have years of experience tutoring Geometry, so I know how to help students find the right answer, such as by paying careful attention to units. I can usually tell when they understand - and when they don't - and can rephrase the problem so they can see it from a different angle.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

Doing well on the SAT math section requires a good foundation in mathematics, which I have and can share. It also requires mastering several other skills. The first is the ability to read the problem carefully, in order to make sure you're answering the right question. The second is the ability to bounce from one idea to the next. A problem may feel completely unfamiliar, but you know more than you think you do. The third skill is the elimination of wrong answers and a strategy for taking the test. I can help with all of these.
