About Nicholas

Before moving to Tucson from El Paso, I was an instructor in management and organizational behavior for undergraduate students at UTEP. I enjoy teaching, and sharing my knowledge and experience with students. I have lived in many cultures around the world, and welcome students of all nationalities and backgrounds.

I tutored in math during my undergraduate studies, within the university and as a private tutor. In graduate school, I have tutored, coached, and mentored students in economics, entrepreneurship, management, accounting, and finance.

My undergraduate major was Computer Science, with a minor in Economics. I continued studying Economics as part of my MBA, along with Strategy, Financial and Management Accounting, Global Business, and Marketing. My MBA concentration was Finance, and my PhD concentration, although I did not finish, was Entrepreneurship and Strategy.

I work as an entrepreneur in biomedical devices and life sciences, and as a part-time advisor and mentor to entrepreneurs, small businesses, and startups generally. Why do I tutor? All of my professional endeavors cost me money and time. None of them generates income yet. Plus, I enjoy it.

Call me, I would be happy to answer your questions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

I co-taught BUSN 1301, Introduction to Global Business, at UTEP last Fall. The class had 360 students, with Foundations of Business, 4e, by Pride, Hughes, and Kapoor as its textbook. We utilized the full Cengage Learning platform including echo360 and MindTap.

Macintosh

I have been a Macintosh user since 1986 and a DOS/Windows user since 1982. I have some limited experience with UNIX and Linux as well. My primary OS is OS X Yosemite. I will upgrade to Capitan in roughly six months. My secondary OS is Windows 10, which I run on a workstation I built myself, for Windows specific apps. I am familiar with remote access to apps through VPN connections and platforms like Citrix Receiver, on OS X and Windows. I have taught MS Excel on both OS X and Windows, for finance and statistics courses.

Marketing

I completed master's and doctoral level coursework in Marketing. In addition to academic papers at the doctoral level, my masters textbook was Marketing Management, 14e, by Philip Kotler and Kevin Keller, widely regarded as the "bible" of marketing studies. Marketing statistics with SPSS was part of my master's coursework. Salesmanship and market entry were my primary topics at the doctoral level.

Public Speaking

I have taught public speaking and presentation as a professional as well as an academic. I am a member of the National Speakers Association. My teaching addresses speaking with and without visual aids, such as PowerPoint slides. I emphasize composition, preparation (including rehearsal), audience interaction and management, and structure, from opening with humor to conclusion and Q&A.

Statistics

I have an MBA which required statistics with Excel, and a year of quantitative methods at the doctoral level. The doctoral program required SPSS as well as Excel.
