The University of Arizona (Elementary Education)
Hi, my name is Melanie and I am a mom of two (3 and 5 years old). Before I had children, I taught elementary education for 8 years. My most recent job was teaching kindergarten in the Vail School District. While teaching in Vail, I was nominated for Teacher of the Year. I have a current Arizona teaching certificate. I have an early childhood endorsement as well as a Spanish/English Immersion endorsement.
Although I love teaching, I was fortunate enough to stay home with my two children. Now that they are more independent, I hope to slowly get back into teaching and thought tutoring is the perfect way. I love finding ways to help students learn in many ways through hands on activities, repetition, and creative exercises. I understand each student learns differently, therefore I always try to find the best way to help students master the skill.
Throughout my years of teaching, I have incorporated reading and vocabulary into the majority of my lessons. I can challenge students and reteach skills that need mastery.
I find it's important to teach students how to "write" their letters rather than "draw" their letters from the beginning. That way students don't need to relearn to write their letters correctly causing unneeded frustration and anxiety.
One of my favorite ways to teach reading to young students is by incorporating phonics into the lessons. There are many fun ways to teach phonics which help can be incorporated into language arts.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a current elementary education Arizona Teaching Certificate which includes and early childhood endorsement. I have experience teaching elementary.
As a past kindergarten teacher, I have taught handwriting to many students. Handwriting is a skill that every student must learn and I enjoy helping teach students learn to "write" their letters and not "draw" their letters.
I have had intensive Language Arts training through the Sunnyside School District. These trainings include teaching phonics to elementary students.
