About Celeste

I was born in Los Angeles and was raised in an intergenerational household. My grandmother, a reading specialist and ballet teacher, and my grandfather, a violinist and general polymath, my mother, aunts, and uncles, encouraged me to be deeply curious about the world and committed to following my curiosity with inquiry. My love of the world of books began long before my first job at age 14 in a small used book and record store. There I was instructed to spend as much time as I liked sitting and reading, becoming familiar with all the books in the store, listening to all the records. For the next ten years, I worked in a number of bookstores becoming familiar not only with the books, but with the publishers, distributors, writers, and most importantly, the readers.

At Mills College, I studied The Book: Its History, Culture, and Creative Form, with a minor in music. I went on to receive a M.A. in Book Arts from Camberwell College of Art in London, UK, and an M.F.A. in Photography from the University of Arizona before beginning to teach at a private elementary and middle school in Tucson. It was this experience that propelled me to begin a doctoral degree in Language, Reading, and Culture with a focus on Adolescent Literature and Literacy and a minor in Rhetoric, Composition, and the Teaching of English. With this program of study, I am trying to balance reading and writing, teaching and learning, thinking and creating, with living and parenting and feeling the profound joys and beauty of family, community, gardening, cooking, and art.

I have been a classroom teacher at the elementary, middle, high school, and college level for over ten years. I taught reading, writing, and literature to youth and pre-service teachers. Now, with my Ph.D. in Education with a focus on Literacy and Literature for youth, I have not only a practical understanding of issues in literacy, but also a strong theoretical and academic understanding as well. I love working with kids and teens and will do my best to help young people know not only how to read, but how to love reading.

Please contact me if you have any questions or to set up a meeting. I look forward to meeting you.

Approved subjects

For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
