About John

I have a degree (BS) in Computer Engineering from the University of Arizona, as well as classes in Control Theory at the Master's level.

I have worked for NOAO (the WIYN telescope on Kitt Peak) and The University of Arizona on missions such as the Cassini mission to Saturn (specifically with the VIMS instrument team) and on the recent OSIRIS REx mission to the asteroid Bennu. My work has entailed design of software processing modules that analyze images (and other scientific data) and plan observations for various instruments on terrestrial and spacecraft platforms.

I enjoy working with people, especially those who wish to learn the joys of programming but who may also be suffering the trials and tribulations of writing good code or understanding the theory behind either the science that is necessary for the mission (calculus, physics, etc.) or the science behind the algorithms themselves (computer science). I would like to aid you, the student, in not only getting good grades but in truly understanding the concepts that you may be struggling with.

I enjoy math and excelled at my math courses in college. These courses extended through to Advanced Engineering Mathematics, such as Fourier Series and Laplace Transforms. I can explain the fundamentals of Calculus, such as differentiation and integration, as well as many techniques of integration, and series solutions. I can also solve differential equations, Laplace Transforms, and some partial differential equations. I used these techniques frequently at work.

I have many years of experience in computer programming, including web programming, programming on many devices, and programming in many languages. These programs covered the complete gamut from one-off scripts to advanced programs to control telescopes and plan observations on spacecraft, including graphics programming that shows realistic depictions of planets and moons from a spacecraft platform. In particular, I have experience with C, C++, Java, Perl, Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, and many other languages.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

C

I have taken several courses in college specifically in the C programming language, including a class specifically in Programming in C using the Kernighan and Richie book. I have used C extensively at work. I have written socket programs in C, simulators for hardware in C, and many other programs in the C language. I have used C extensively in other programming languages, such as the Swift programming language on the iPhone, using bridging code to link those programs in. I know about file processing, input/output, basic operators, structs, and have made linked lists, queues, stacks, and other data structures in C.

C++

I have taken several courses in college specifically in the C++ programming language. I have used C++ extensively at work. I have written graphics programs in C++, language compilers, and many other programs in the C++ language. I have used C++ extensively in other programming languages, such as the Swift programming language on the iPhone, using bridging code to link those programs in. I know about file processing, input/output, basic operators, classes, and have used the STL (Standard Template Libraries) in C++.

Computer Programming

I have taken several courses in college specifically in the multiple programming languages, including C, C++, assembly language, Fortran, Java, APL, LISP, Icon, and others. I took many Computer Science courses en route to my Computer Engineering degree. I have used C, C++, Perl, Ruby on Rails, Groovy on Grails, Python, and others extensively at work. I have written socket programs in C, simulators for hardware in C, graphics programs in C++, language compilers in C++, and extensive scripting in Perl, Python, and others. I know about file processing, input/output, basic operators, structs, classes. and have made linked lists, queues, stacks, and other data structures in C. I have written web programs and I am familiar with Javascript, Java Server Pages, Ruby on Rails, and Groovy on Grails and have written web interfaces in these languages.
