University of Arizona (English)
I was a teacher for 25 years--10 years in Tucson, and 15 years in 6 different countries overseas. I tutored high school students in English for 2 years overseas. I taught middle school Language Arts and Typing at two middle schools. I taught English and Vocabulary at two High Schools. My teaching experience started with the Extended Day Program, an afternoon/evening program that provided instruction to students unable to attend a regular high school. My students either worked day jobs, had baby-sitting responsibilities, or couldn't handle the regular high school hours or environment. I moved from teaching in this program to teaching English and Vocabulary at Project High School, now University High School. This school recruited high school students who excelled academically and socially and was conceived and founded by my husband, J. McGee E.
My husband and I interviewed for teaching positions in English language schools overseas. Our first posting was Bangkok, Thailand. From there, we taught in Kuwait City, Kuwait (where I tutored students in English for 2 years), Sao Paulo, Brazil, New Delhi, India, Karachi, Pakistan, and finally in Managua, Nicaragua. My husband was the High School Principal at each school and I taught either middle school or high school Typing, English and Vocabulary. I returned to Tucson and worked as Assistant Director for 2 federally funded literacy programs for at-risk students in grades 1-12. While my tutoring experience overseas was limited, I was inspired by each student's willingness to learn a second or even third language. These students' hunger for learning was exciting and extremely rewarding.
My goal in life has always been to help students no matter their learning skills or background. I have taught students in a regular public school settings, high schools students specifically recruited for their academically excellence, at-risk students needing a different learning environment and more 1-on-1 assistance. I have been a teacher in overseas private schools, working with students from divergent cultures, languages, and learning experiences. I've also worked with adults interested in teaching students, at all grade levels, as part of their Associate Degrees in Early Childhood Education, Elementary and Secondary Education, Psychology, Sociology and History. This range of experience makes me uniquely skilled to tutor students who want or need help to accomplish their educational goals. Above all, I love people and I love helping anyone learn to value learning.
I want to tutor English and I am blessed with a wide range of skills and experiences, and a keen interest in helping any and all students improve their understanding and abilities to read, write, and appreciate literature. I am interested in knowing you and I hope you are interested in knowing me. I was a teacher for 25 years--10 years in Tucson, and 15 years in 6 different countries overseas. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
