I have been teaching high school English for over 20 years. I have always loved reading and writing, and I am fortunate to be able to work in a profession that allows me to share that enthusiasm every day. One of my favorite experiences in teaching is having the ability to work one-on-one with students and watch them improve. Being with young adults every day keeps me young and energetic.
I have taught every level of high school English. I can help you write a basic paragraph or determine how to put together a successful essay for AP Literature or AP Language. Need grammar help? I'm a self-proclaimed grammar nerd. Scared of poetry? We can allay those fears. If reading comprehension is an issue, whether for fiction or non-fiction texts, I can help you with an array of strategies. Reading and writing are skills necessary for every school subject and for "real life," and I would love to help you be successful.
I would be happy to meet you at the Oro Valley public library, a coffee shop, or in your home. Please email me with any further questions or to book a session. I look forward to working with you. I am very happy with what I learned. She new the answers to all my questions. I wish I had a teacher like her when I was in high school. I highly recommend hiring her.
We have been extremely impressed with how much Cynthia has helped our daughter with writing English papers. She has helped her, so much. She now has an "A" in her class and is really enjoying writing papers. Thank you, Cynthia!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been teaching English for over 20 years. I have taught grades 9-12 at every level from remedial to Advanced Placement. Curriculum for these courses includes writing, grammar, literary and rhetorical analysis, reading strategies for increased comprehension, and vocabulary. I currently teach at an academically rigorous charter school.
In my 20-plus years of teaching high school English, I have become very proficient in understanding and teaching grammar, including advanced concepts such as types of clauses, pronoun cases, and parallelism. I am also adept at breaking down and scaffolding learning for grammar.
I earned a B.A. with distinction in English from the University of Washington, and my emphasis was on literature. As part of my undergraduate education, I wrote a literary analysis for my honors thesis. I have taught literature for over 20 years and am familiar with many works from the canon as well as award-winning contemporary literature for both adults and young adults. I currently teach Advanced Placement literature at a rigorous charter school.
To me, writing is like cooking. Sometimes a recipe is necessary: perhaps the dish or the cooking technique is new, perhaps the cook is inexperienced or uncomfortable with the process of cooking. A good recipe, followed correctly, will ensure edible food. However, for someone who is confident and capable in the kitchen, a recipe can be stultifying. I can provide recipes for writing and also assist in breaking free of those restraints.
