For reading: I have had success working with first grade students. I use a special book with 20 lessons, and the student receives a copy of each lesson. Generally it takes two sessions per lessons. I include hands on tactile learning activities with word dominos, word bingo, word puzzles etc. I focus on both phonics and site reading and use word grids for each phonic sound. I also work with the recommended Dolch word list. I combine activities: physical hopping. coloring, and even help the student write his own story and put it into a book. I also bring many different kinds of books to read with the student.
For adults: I have many years teaching and tutoring experience. I focus on solid skills, established textbooks and progressive learning. I can make learning fun and personal. Everyone can learn. I use several methods and techniques--each person relates differently to new ideas and thoughts. I encourage tutoring sessions in the local library so that the student begins exploring both the physical books as well as online resources.
My students learn more than the subject material-they learn how to learn and study. They also begin to put what they learn into context and ask questions to dig deeper. If we are successful, the student will learn how to explore, how to analyze, how to apply critical thinking skills. The basis of solid education is reading and thinking. I use Bloomberg's Taxonomy for the applied skills; students need sharp detailed skills for employment, college and graduate school.
I taught and supervised ESL classes for children and adults for 5 years. I have 15 college credit hours in Linguistics, and I understand language learning. I particularly focus on speaking and listening skills, especially pronunciation for foreign speakers.
I also have a BA in French and Spanish literature and can teach reading skills, literature and vocabulary. I have taught beginning literacy and tutored high school literature, as well as college literature.
I am near native fluent in Spanish. I have an MA in Spanish, lived in Mexico and Spain. I taught 8 years Spanish first and second year at the community college. I a currently teaching Spanish at Baker College and I work during the day as a Bilingual Specialist for GM CCA for Toluca, Mexico. I focus on speaking and listening, accents, most common vocabulary. Cheryl is a wonderful teacher! I learned many things over our time together tonight. We reviewed sections of the text book and many lessons on Hay, Soy, Somos and more. I'm looking forward to meeting with her in the future!
I would strongly recommend Cheryl as a tutor. She offers a practical yet creative approach to engaging my first grader for a productive learning experience. She also provides great feedback about our son's progress.
I am pleased with the lesson. Cheryl is exactly what I was looking for in a tutor. I find her to be very patient with me and extremely encouraging.
it is my privilege to work with highly motivated students like Jim. I want to help him achieve his goals of speaking and listening with better comprehension. I know he can do this!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
