University of Missouri-St. Louis (Graduate Coursework)
My name is Joe and I am an ESL, English, Social Studies, and Political Science tutor living in sunny Tucson, Arizona. I recently moved to Tucson, and so far I am enjoying the fantastic weather and beautiful outdoor scenery. I received my undergraduate degree in my hometown of St. Louis from Saint Louis University, and I also have graduate coursework in the field of ESL. My tutoring and teaching experience dates back to my senior year of high school. As part of a service project, I volunteered full time in a special needs middle school, tutoring and teaching students in English Language Arts. During part of my undergraduate education, I also tutored ESL students at the university. Post-graduation, I volunteered for 14 months for a local non-profit in St. Louis, where I was the lead ESL teacher. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of my experiences with teaching and tutoring and I hope to make a career in the field of education.
While working with students in the Tucson area, my main objective will be to establish academic goals for each student and provide them with the assistance and support needed to reach those goals. The first step in the process will be meeting with the student and listening to their academic needs and discussing the areas that they would like to improve. We will then work backwards from those goals, creating a step-by-step plan that will help the student achieve them. Each tutoring session will then consist of working through the steps until the student meets their goals. I believe there is no goal that is too big or too small. For example one goal might be: “I want to drastically improve my English over the course of the next several months.” While another goal might be: “I want to get an A on my English essay next week.” Whatever your academic objectives are, I believe we can work together to achieve them! Thanks and I look forward to meeting you!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I hold a TEFL Certificate from the TEFL institute and have taken graduate level coursework in the field of TESOL.
As an ESL teacher, I have designed curriculum and taught English language classes based on thematic units for an ESL course for a local immigrant advocacy organization, selected and acquired class textbook, workbook, and multimedia tools and created all tests, quizzes, and homework activities.
