About Oscar

I come from a family of teachers. I have three university degrees, and worked my way through graduate school by teaching composition and public speaking. Since then, I have taught and tutored in a range of subjects, from math and reading to history, foreign languages, and finance, and at levels from middle school to graduate school.

My approach is holistic, letting each field inform others and looking for points of intersection. For example, I have found that most students better understand and appreciate mathematical concepts if they consider not only the "what" (i.e., rules) but also the "why" (historical development and context).

You may think that this larger perspective is not relevant if you, like many of my students, simply want to get a strong score on the SAT, GRE, GMAT, or other standardized test. But keep in mind that those who do best on these tests are those who can make intelligent inferences on questions where the answer is uncertain - much like the game show Jeopardy!, where I was once a contestant.

While offering help on a specific test or in a specific subject matter, my goal is also to help build study and research skills and a curiosity that will serve my students well in a lifelong learning process. To that end, I encourage students to work hard and challenge themselves, and I work hard with them. Homework will be required, and helpful feedback will be provided in return.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

I have studied Latin for five years, and classical Greek for two years. My undergraduate minor was in Classics. In my literature classes, I was the person to whom instructors routinely referred questions relating to Greek or Roman literature or mythology. My competence in Latin and Greek is no longer such that I would consider myself capable of tutoring in those languages, but I feel comfortable tutoring in the areas of classical literature, art, and history.

Film

I have a master's degree in film studies from the University of Iowa, one of the finest film programs in the U.S. I completed an additional year of graduate study in film at the Centre américain du cinema in Paris. I have taught film courses at the college level, and review films for film festivals.
