Achieve Academic and Social Success Without A Lot of Stress
Earning a University degree is challenging. Earning a degree in a language other than your native language is considerably more challenging. It is likely that after studying English in your home country for years and passing the TOEFL, you felt prepared and excited to start your life as a student in the United States. If you have come to realize that learning a language in a classroom and using the language in academic and everyday life are two very different things, you are not alone. It can be exhausting and overwhelming and you are wise to seek help.
Please allow me to help you achieve success without a lot of stress. I am an English Language Coach, which means I will help you to use and improve the English you already know (which is a lot!) both in your studies and in your social life. I will help you to:
*Sharpen your writing skills
*Gain confidence in giving oral presentations
*Complete homework assignments
*Take an active role in group projects
*Improve pronunciation and speech patterns
*Expand your vocabulary
*Find groups or clubs that share your special interests
*Work on your social skills
I believe you will learn better if you are relaxed (which means getting away from the classroom and the library for a while), so I invite you to come to my home, share a pot of tea, get some exercise by walking around the neighborhood, perhaps. Meetings will be based on your individual needs and goals, so we will work together to establish and implement a path to achievement.
While our main focus will be meeting your academic goals, your American university experience should also include making friends and going out. Friends are also valuable resources when you need help with school work. I will assist you in meeting the challenge of initiating conversation with other students; asking for help in understanding American idioms; inviting a classmate to join you for tea or coffee, accepting social invitations, etc. Improving your confidence in using English will lessen your anxiety and put you on the path to a successful and fulfilling university experience – and ultimately, a University degree.
I have a TEFL certificate with endorsements in Business English and Grammar; an Arizona Department of Education Adult Education Certificate; was a school librarian for 6 years; have volunteered with The Friends of the Pima County Public Library for 14 years, managing the Children and Teen’s sections of their book sales; as an AmeriCorps member, I taught English to refugees; currently I teach ESL with the Head Start Adult Education Program.
I enjoy spending time with University students because they are full of energy, ideas, ideals, and the desire to learn, and are fun and interesting. I enjoy teaching ESL because I get to work with wonderful people from many different cultures. Being an English coach for foreign students at the University is a perfect combination of the two. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a TEFL Certificate with additional endorsements in Business English and Grammar, and an Adult Education Certificate. Additionally, as an AmeriCorps member, I tutored refugee students and assisted in the ESL classrooms, I teach small classes at Head Start Adult Education.
I have been a newsletter editor, proofreader and article contributor for several non-profit groups, a school, and a professional academic association. In addition, I have helped many university students edit essays and term papers. My strongest skills are finding grammatical errors and condensing overly long writings to meet the word limit set by an instructor.
Writing is something I do well - no special training or degrees, just something I love to do and am good at. I help people to write cover letters for job applications, college application essays, school essays and term papers, refugee and immigrant stories etc. Writing is a wonderful way to express feelings or let your imagination run wild.
