I have tutored college level students in Sociology, English/English as a second language (ESL), and psychology.I have approximately 4 years of tutoring experience.
My own academic pursuits, mostly in the social sciences and in English, resulted in a college career dotted with straight As. I am a master's level clinical social worker but like to tutor on the side.
A note to prospective students about what my services entail and what they do not entail: I help you break down concepts, explain and clarify concepts; I look over assignments together with you, and I make sure that the you understand what the assignment expects from you. The tutoring process is collaborative, it involves thinking things through together, looking at organization and structure of essays, brain-storming ideas, proof-reading, etc. It is a collaborative process but you are doing the work, the heavy-lifting in terms of actually writing the paper, taking the exam, or doing the reading that is required for the assignment. Tutoring is not where I actually type up papers for you or do all the reading for you -- that is something else and is not a part of the services that I offer. I charge in 30 minute chunks: 30 minutes of tutoring is $20, but 35, 40, or 45 minute sessions are charged as an hour -- $40.
I'm so lucky that I have Mr. Johannes as a tutor. He is so patient, has great knowledge about the subject, and is a great and professional teacher. I will call him again for future help. Thank you, Johannes.
Johannes is a great tutor. He is always on time, easy to reach by phone with any questions, always comes prepared with a lesson plan. He is very knowledgeable and has shown new techniques to help improve our son's reading and writing. He is improving with each lesson. My son connects with him and was always in a good mood after their session together. Thank you, Johannes!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I majored in Sociology in college. I graduated from college with straight As. I tutored sociology at the college level for one year.
I have worked with special needs populations for a total of 10 years; I have worked as a life-coach in a residential setting where I helped individuals -- teens -- diagnosed with autism, down-syndrome, and mood-disorders with basic living skills such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, and help with school work. I have also worked with a similar special needs population -- adults -- at a work-place facility that served as the day job facility of the population I worked with; there I would assist them in their work duties, which included making musical instruments. I have also worked with special needs children between the ages of 5 and 13 as a summer camp counselor; this work entailed a lot of arts and crafts activities, including song, dance, sports, and theater.
