About Taylor

As a certified English teacher in the State of Arizona, I have over 10 years’ experience working with high school students to improve their writing skills. My experiences have shown me that my students learn best through one-on-one attention to their unique needs as learners.

The heart of my practice is to empower students to feel capable, intelligent, and full of ideas worth expressing. The heart of my process focuses on using supportive questions to help students to identify their prompt, audience, and purpose for writing. I emphasize friendly, low-stress conversation to help the student plan his or her ideas out loud, transfer verbal ideas to written ideas, and develop clear organization and on-topic content appropriate to the task or assignment. Next, I use the questioning process to help a student identify and implement a plan for revision. As a final step, we proofread and edit sentence fluency, grammar, and punctuation errors, emphasizing a deeper understanding of the patterns and reasons behind correct usage.

I am available only the weekends to work with students, as I teach full-time during the week. I am open to scheduling longer sessions, and I can teach online. I will work devotedly to help students develop high-quality final products, as long as a student is motivated to learn and grow.

I have experience working with the Common Core’s English Language Arts Standards. I am also familiar with university-level assignments in English 101 and 102 at the University of Arizona, as I have collaborated with University of Arizona instructors in the Wildcat Writers program from 2008 -2014.

I prefer to meet in a public location. I am willing to travel to a mutually agreed upon location, such as a public library, a university study room, or university library. I can teach online as well if you do not live in Tucson, or if even if you do live in Tucson but prefer to meet online instead.

Last but not least, I truly love helping others with their writing. Composition is a challenging process, and I have the interpersonal and academic skills to guide diverse learners to success and confidence with writing.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Microsoft PowerPoint

As a classroom teacher, I often give my students the option to make PowerPoint presentations to accompany their oral presentations. PowerPoints are just like any other kind of composition; they require a good understanding of rhetorical techniques necessary to communicate effectively with an audience. Although I have the minimum technical expertise required to work with and teach this program, the more important skill set I possess relates to my understanding of how audience, purpose, and message must be adequately analyzed before a communicator can design an effective presentation. I can help students to design their message strategically using this tool.
