I have worked in the field of higher education for 20+ years and the aspect I have enjoyed most about this experience is the opportunity to coach and teach students (of all walks of life, ages, cultures, etc.) how to reach their potential as life-long learners. I get special satisfaction from helping others learn the Spanish language - whether from the very beginning levels to coaching for AP classes/exams to honing higher level cognitive skills of Spanish majors at the university level. I am a "near native" speaker of Spanish which means that Spanish is my second language (I learned at roughly the age of 10) but I am often mistaken for a native speaker - seeing others attain this same level of proficiency is awesome!
I have taught basic Spanish courses (first through fifth semesters) at both the university and community college levels. My approach to language study is communicative; in other words, I teach language skills (i.e. grammar) through contexts, using various artifacts to facilitate the learning process (film, literature, role-play, etc.)
I am a mother, wife, administrator (essentially in that order) with a penchant for helping others. I view tutoring as a reciprocal relationship built upon mutual trust and respect. So, if you are a student struggling with your Spanish courses, or you need someone to help you review for an exam, or you just want to learn a new language for personal development, I would be honored to assist you. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
