Hello! I have 12 years of experience as a professor and three years as a private tutor for special needs students from ages 15 to 25, as well as all kinds of students in college and high school.

I can help you with your classwork, and I can help you get into college and grad school too! I'm best at helping students of all ages and abilities learn to write and speak English better, and to remember what they read. However, I have taught and tutored students in advanced science and psychology, and I can help with those sorts of courses too.

I'm also kind and super funny! I keep in touch with my former UCLA students and my private tutees. I consider myself to be a mentor. I love teaching one-on-one. I value our time together, and we will make progress and get you where you want to be. My personal approach involves patience and kindness and fun - not strictness or intimidation, but we will stay focused and find the study manner and environment that works best for you.

Usually I let my students "drive" the session. You tell me what you need to get out of it, whether it be just passing the test, or help writing a paper, or, even better, acquiring learning skills. But I know that sometimes we can't exactly identify why it is that we're not getting what we would like out of our classes. Maybe a teacher or professor is not structured enough for you, or maybe you would learn better if we listened to your recorded voice. Maybe you need less structure and we should free-write a bit. I believe students learn best in different ways; in fact, I have seen this in action and helped students identify their own learning abilities. This helps you get through life way beyond your tutoring time with me: it is a skill you can keep forever and hopefully "pay forward."

I look forward to teaching you either at my home, your home, or a coffee shop. I've begun teaching online as well. See you soon!

I learned to read when I was 1 1/2 and feel that books are a wonderful place for anyone to escape the daily trials of life. Also, reading a lot helps people isolate errors in spelling and grammar, and therefore will become better writers: a vital skill in any job they hold. I can teach reading in several different ways, to any audience.

History

Anthropology,

Anthropology

I am a Ph.D. in anthropology with a degree from UCLA; I also carry master's and bachelor's degrees in the subject. My dissertation was about aesthetic preferences among 64 middle-class families in Lima, Peru, and Los Angeles, California. I used quantitative and qualitative methods to gather and analyze my data. I have taught university-level anthropology courses at three colleges, totaling seven years of experience (most recently in 2012). I have published two peer-reviewed articles on my research, have two more in the works, and edit two peer-reviewed journals (Anthropology Now and Teachers College Record).
Social Studies,

Social Studies

My educational background, which includes Ph.D., master's, and bachelor's degrees in anthropology, qualifies me to teach social studies at any level. One-on-one tutoring the subject will be enjoyable, as preparing students for cultural understanding and global interactions is preparation for any career they choose. Having taught such subjects as religion, philosophy, anthropology, archaeology, and history, I think I can help students get to where they need to be to make informed decisions and write critical papers indicating mastery of the subject.
Sociology,

Sociology

I am currently teaching what my college calls Sociology 211 (the sociology of Latin America) as well as Sociology 201 (Introduction to Sociology). Because I am the head of the General Education program at this college, I am in charge of curricular development for these courses. Thus when I teach them, I ensure that my and my faculty's transmission and assessment of information is accurate and fair for all students. Of course, I am only qualified to do this because I took several sociology courses at the doctoral level at UCLA, including my favorite - the Sociology of Urbanism. I feel that I can and would enjoy tutoring this subject.

I have conducted four years of field-based archaeology, with both survey and excavation data-gathering and -analyses experience. My work has been in Peru, and on the military bases of Fort Carson, Colorado, and Fort Bliss, Texas. I have taken five college courses in the subject, including two at the doctoral level, and later taught the Introduction to Archaeology at UCLA on my own.
Psychology,

Psychology

I've been working with two college students on their senior-level psychology courses for the last year. It's been going great, but they both graduated! The classes were mostly writing-based but heavy on the theory and they did involve some objective tests.
