I have 8 years' experience teaching English, both online and in the classroom, with high school students. Four years were spent working as both a Special Education Coordinator for my school, as well as teaching English and computer classes. I have a Master's in Education with an emphasis in Special Education (Learning Disabilities) 2005. My Bachelor's is in Journalism with a minor in English. I have worked extensively with at-risk students with learning disabilities in reading and writing, as well as struggling learners who lack motivation. If you need help passing the reading or writing portions of the AIMS test, I can help you. As part of a Dell Computers grant, I taught MS Office free to the public for a semester. I have an excellent track record of success with students with disabilities and can provide school references.
Prior to teaching, I worked in graphic design, was a typesetter and beta-tester for Corel Draw (professional graphic program) prior to its initial release in the 1980s, managed a computer hardware/software retail company with digital output service. I was a software instructor and problem solver, and raised performance horses for 10 years when my daughter was young. I continue to take courses to keep current on software programs (Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, MS Office, printmaking classes at UA) and have a new passion with digital photography and computer manipulation.
As you might guess, I am a Renaissance woman and also Japanese-American, friendly and an enthusiastic motivator. My desire is to help others find their point of brilliance by opening up the world of words and communication. Kids and students love me as a teacher. I don't believe in harsh criticism, or really, any criticism. Positive reinforcement is what works for me. I brought a high school student reading at the first semester 3rd grade level to the second semester 8th grade level in 2 semesters. Instead of dropping out, he gained confidence and learned my method of writing excellent essays (I can teach anyone this), learned to read and consumes books about his favorite baseball stars.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Taught secondary English from 2000-2008.
