if you want to have a lot of fun with a multi-media approach to Spanish learning, look no more! Spanish is the main subject I tutor, because I especially love Spanish. My English writing and speaking skills are excellent also, since proofing, clear grammar, syntax, punctuation, and public speaking abilities are important in all languages.
I have taught college Spanish in Spanish-only at the U. of California in Santa Cruz (UCSC), and I have taught 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th grade bilingual classes. Currently, I have six very loyal adult WyzAnt clients who have been with me over a year. I tutor high school students through another national company, and I also have three private classes for groups of adults.
I've lived in Madrid, Southern Spain, and Mexico, and have traveled in Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Puerto Rico. I recently spent two weeks driving through all of Baja California, where I was focusing on geography, history, land use, irrigation, and water conservation practices, and agriculture. I spent two weeks in Ecuador last year, and helped with a history study trip to Sonora last Spring,
I April I spent two weeks driving throughout both Baja California Norte and Baja California Sur ( 2500 miles!) and got to play with and pat some grey whales!!) and I will be doing two another trip in September of 2016 - one more historical/cultural and architectural.
While living in the Salinas-Monterey area of California I worked seven years selling advertising to many Spanish-only clients for Radio Suprema, Inc., a company of three Spanish language commercial radio stations, and later for Comcast (then ATT Broadband). I was their token "gringa" of 24 Hispanic employees at the radio station! Many days I spoke only Spanish all day with our various client-business owners and with our various DJs. I know about a thousand top-40 songs from the last 30 years!
My teaching style is very adaptable to your needs. Inquiry Based Learning is a concept where you come with your questions and what you want to learn, and whatever level you are at, and then we go from there and develop a plan for YOU. I have many, many vocabulary activities, conversation practice and grammar practice for adults, bingo, conversation-starters, and twenty questions games in Spanish, short verses that are examples of grammar concepts, and many grammar handouts and exercises because I am involved in writing a textbook.
I am familiar with many of the current textbooks, Pima, U of A curriculum, Duolingo and Pimsleur, Rosetta Stone and Behind the Wheel CDs. I also have several current TOEFL practice books.
I have a strong business background in Spanish for adults. Last year I did 18 weeks of immersion for government agency students. Several years ago I tutored Rotarians and Rotary Group Study Exchange participants going to Spanish-speaking countries. Hispanic clients come to me to learn style, spelling and accent marks. I am the queen of accent mark placement!
Phonetics and speaking accent are very strong points with me. I have a bunch of helpful tips for how to improve your pronunciation and accent both in English and in Spanish. You can pronounce anything in Spanish with a couple accent mark rules!
My schedule is flexible and can probably accommodate your needs. Most late afternoons and evenings and weekends are available. I'm looking forward to working with you!

Cynthia is the best... in every way. Very professional, prompt, knowledgeable, personable with a passion for everything Spanish! I needed private lessons for business and personal reasons and was fortunate enough to find her on WyzAnt. Although she was born a gringa I think her soul is Latin. She loves the language, culture, music and politics of the Latin world. She has traveled and lived it... personally and professionally. She has taught Spanish at the college level. As a tutor, she is a rare find and I give her 5 stars!
Cynthia was well prepared, knowledgeable, friendly and extremely helpful. Her was readily available and punctual. I highly recommend her for your tutoring needs.
Learned tools to help with my reading comprehension. Allowed me to relate what I was reading to my own situations. Pleasure working with her. Look forward to our next tutor session.
Right away I knew Cynthia was going to be an awesome teacher! Prior to our first scheduled session, she inquired about my current level in Spanish as well as what my goals were for our sessions together. By having this information beforehand, we were able to hit the ground running on our first session together. Cynthia also has a great sense of humor which helps one to feel comfortable while trying to speak another language. She is extremely knowledgeable not only about the mechanics of the language, but also about the Mexican culture which is as important as learning the language. Cynthia is a very motivating teacher and continues to encourage me to use my newly acquired language skills when possible. I truly look forward to more Spanish tutoring sessions with her!
We have had 5 lessons with Cynthia and she is patient and creative in helping us to speak and comprehend Spanish. She is willing to spend time on things we have difficulty with and never makes us feel rushed. She is a wonderful teacher.
She keeps things interesting, rolls in topics about the culture and geography of language we are studying, and provides class with ample opportunity to request direction of lessons to suit our need.
Cynthia tutored me in Spanish 101 and 102 at The University of Arizona. she was very helpful and also made learning Spanish very fun! She has a great personality and will be sure to put a smile on your face while you are learning. My tutoring sessions with her were definitely one of the better parts of my day, and I learned so much. I passed my class and still remember a lot of the language months later! She has fantastic hand outs and flashcards that she will give or lend you that are extremely helpful. She also will send an email after a session going over everything that you discussed which is helpful for reviewing on your own time. I highly recommend her as a tutor!
Cynthia has a unique style of teaching. Her personality is fun and encouraging. I am looking forward to future sessions and being able to see my daughter excel in Spanish!
I recommend Cynthia as a tutor; I'm taking classes with her for TOEFL ibt and I feel that I'm getting better with the speaking section, that was one of my weakness. Cynthia has a complete understanding what is necessary for TOEFL. She has been pushing me in order to get a higher score.
She has a great knowledge about any topic and it fits perfect with TOEFL.
When it comes to personality, she is very kind, patient and I'm sure you will laugh with some of her comments.
In conclusion, I really recommend Cynthia, don't hesitate to choose Cynthia as your tutor.
I enjoy my time with Cynthia. She presents innovative ideas on how to improve my Spanish. I am grateful to have such an excellent teacher. I continue to learn from Cynthia.
I have had private tutoring with Cynthia for just over a year, and have been wanting to write a review. I have had other tutors in the past, but none with the professionalism or depth of knowledge that Cynthia has. All the grammar, the expressions, syntax, nuances are made clear and understandable. Also, she has years of experience in the Spanish language radio business and can haul out a song lyric for any occasion. We talk about everything under the sun, and the lessons are not only beneficial, but fun too. I have the highest respect for her as a teacher, and consider her my friend as well. You won't find anyone better.
The perfect tutor. You will be more than satisfied with Cynthia. Always on time, always cheerful and optimistic and encouraging. Exceptional knowledge. All around good experience.
Cynthia is a great tutor ! She tailors the lessons to suit our needs and makes the lessons enjoyable. She is flexable in both her teaching methods and lessons which keeps the learning interesting as well as informative.
Cynthia is really excellent. She establishes what I should prepare for the next lesson, and comes well prepared both to drill me and to assist me. She has a wealth of prepared items for different areas of grammar and vocabulary, and is ready to answer my questions. Most Highly recommended
I have taken tutoring lessons from Cynthia for about 6 months now and I find that her lessons teach me things I can't find in the book. She is very patient and helps me understand the concepts of things rather than just memorizing. She uses different methods of studying and showcasing examples. I would recommend Cynthia as a tutor for anyone who has trouble learning Spanish like I did. She is wonderful!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Reading for content and nuance and making inferences, and of course spelling, and understanding grammar and punctuation (which can make all the difference!! For example: The cowboy eats, shoots and leaves. vs The panda eats shoots and leaves.
I have over 300 hours with WyzAnt tutoring Spanish and a five star rating and many testimonials. In college I was an anthropology minor. Also, a big part of my MA in Mexican Studies was Aztec and Mayan archaeology.
I have studied upper division courses in both cultural anthropology and physical anthropology, and forensic anthropology - (similar to the bone fragment ID process as seen in the TV show Bones) and also archaeology of Mexico and of coastal Indians of California (Ohlone - Costanoan), and have a high personal interest in Latin-based languages and a personal love of philology and linguistics and phonetics. 99% of my tutoring clients with WyzAnt are with adults. Some of our language study involves etymology and linguistics and the history of Spanish and how it relates to Latin (especially medical terms and legal terms) and to other languages and how it has evolved through the centuries with its Arabic influences and American indigenous languages influences.
Having an M. A. in Spanish and Latin American Studies, and being more than fifty years old, I have had an outstanding education in English grammar and writing skills.
I have more than four years' experience teaching English and bilingual Spanish/English to immigrant children in the California elementary school - 2nd grade level, 4th grade level, 5th grade level, and Kindergarten level.
I am an English native speaker with no particular regional accent. Teaching Spanish now for most of my life, I have a keen awareness of how to work with both English and Latin-based language grammar, and how to compare the similarities and contrast the differences.
I have many, many vocabulary and conversation activities that are appropriate for any language and age level. Among them are high quality flashcards of photos and pictures of people interacting in various situations -- a picnic in the park, working together in a mechanic's garage, attending a meeting, etc., stickers and flashcards.
I have a Master's degree in Spanish and language arts, and I currently tutor job seekers and graduate students who will take the TOEFL exam. TOEFL is the test of English as a second language that many corporate employers and English language graduate schools require for technical and management positions and for graduate studies. TOEFL is much like SAT reading and grammar, only more so!
I taught college Spanish in Spanish-only at the U. of California in Santa Cruz (UCSC), and I am current with the U of A and Pima textbooks and curriculum. I have taught 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th grade bilingual migrant-ed classes.
Do it once; do it right. Study efficiently!
Have the needed notebooks and reference materials. Be aware of deadlines and plan ahead. Have a place for all your materials.
Read the directions and the fine print!
Ask the teacher so you're sure you understand the assignment!
Feet on the floor, take a deep breath, eliminate distractions, write clearly so you know what every letter is when you go to read out loud.
Proof read out loud everything that you are going to submit. This is absolutely a must for efficiently retaining foreign language pronunciation and speaking skills. Foreign language is like learning a script, which you then ad lib.
Before reading something, first read the attached questions so that you know ahead of time what information you need to look for and remember. Put your materials in the car the night before!
Words of a successful Masters degree graduate, mom, grandmother and small business owner.
Having taught Spanish for many years, I have a complete grasp of the grammar and writing style of my native language, English. Also, years of proofreading have given me an eagle eye for understanding and checking spelling and punctuation and the various rules.
I have a non-accent American English pronunciation suitable for radio/TV voice, which I have done in the past when I worked for radio stations and for ATT Broadband (now Comcast).
My most recent tutoring student passed TOEFL handily. He is a mechanical engineer with John Deere in Mexico who now plans to go to graduate school in Canada to study bioengineering and design prostheses.
Clear, concise writing in several languages has been my career for over 30 years. Also proofreading, copywriting, and translation. I am the queen of punctuation! I can help you with applications, research papers, cover letters, whatever your needs may be.
