About Maria Martha

Hi,

My name is Martha. I am a Para Professional with Sunnyside School District Special Education at Los Amigos Elementary. I also was a Para Professional with an emergency teaching degree many years ago with TUSD. Currently in my position at SUSD I resource out from K-6th grade.

I enjoy my job because I love to see students learn. It is such a reward seeing a smile when they thought they would never understand a subject. It sometimes takes that one-to-one learning with someone to build their confidence in what they are doing. I am a very positive person and love to teach.

I like to tutor in a fun way making it fun for the student. Each child/student is different so I go with the personality of the student.

My daughters who are now ages 32 and 28, have taught me a lot being they have different ways of learning and I am there to help. Both are very successful in their careers.

I am available during the week from 5:30 pm - 8 pm . I am also available on Saturdays from 9am - 4pm.

In my eyes every student is intelligent in his/her own way...and I believe strongly no child is left behind.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I was a para professional in an elementary school for many years. A para professional not only assists the teacher in preping assignments but also teaches students on the side as needed which is pretty much all the time.

I would take students to another room and help them in a particular subject in which they were not doing well. In doing this I would need to have a lesson plan or go with the guide lines of the school district in which I worked with which was Tucson Unified School District.

I always had and have a way of communicating with students in which they are very cooperative with me. I am very patient and scope in on the students needs and weaknesses in order for them to get confidence in what they are learning. Sometimes that is all it takes to have them grasp what they are weak in.

I do feel confident in showing students how to learn study skills in order for them to study at home or at school without feeling bored. Alot of this has to do with comprehension of a subject. I do know alot of these students are embarressed to ask questions in order not to look bad in front of others, which I encourage through lessons again giving them confidence and understanding that they can learn anything.

Parents at Tucson Unified School District would request me for tutoring after school, in which I would do on a volunteer basis.

As I have mentioned in my profile, every student is smart and can learn.

Phonics

I was a bilingual Ed assistant and tutored with Tucson Unified District. I am very strong in teaching Phonics for kinder & other students who need help in their 2nd language.

Special Needs

As a para professional with Tucson Unified School Distict I assisted alot in Bilingual Special Education. My thoughts on Special Ed are very strong in having a child feel accepted.

I also was very stong in main streaming students in other classes in which it was proven by adapting there classwork into there level they would show a tremendous improvement in subjects and there personal evaluations.

Study Skills

Study skills in a very important for a student to learn. When I teach it I make it fun in order for the student to not just sit there bored.

I like to show them how to memorize and learn without getting frustrated with themselves and giving up. During these lessons they also learn the concept of the subject.
