Greetings! I received my degree in Fine Art from Arizona State University. My emphasis was in painting and drawing. I am a professional artist and have been drawing and painting for over 30 years. I have owned my own art gallery in downtown Phoenix by the name of Gallery Serendipity, shown in several galleries in Arizona and across the country. My themes and subjects include African American themes, social issues, urban scenes, portraits and the figure. In addition to traditional drawing and painting, I am also a illustrator and muralist.
I have over 5 years experience in teaching art classes to adults and children. I have taught private instruction and small group instruction at art stores across Arizona. I also taught studio art classes at AZ Prep in Chandler AZ. I am currently also a substitute art teacher for the Mesa School district, for grades K-12. I love teaching art because its benefits are priceless. It is very rewarding to guide students and provide an outlet for students to enjoy self expression. Art is therapeutic and has the ability heal.
I am an outstanding art tutor because I allow the student to explore and experiment with art in their own way. I do teach traditional skills, but focus more on the process of making art itself, and the intended concept or message that the artist has in mind. I once had an instructor say " you only need to be good enough to get your point across". I believe this to be true. Art is a form of communication. It is not a contest on who draws the best nose, etc... Too much emphasis is placed on skill level instead of the human level.
If I sound like someone who you'd like to take lessons from, please contact me. Again, I am interested in guiding students in using art, as a tool, to find a place of peace and serenity in the process, tell a story, communicate a special meaning, or just to simply create something beautiful. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to teach drawing because of the formal education I received in Drawing, Painting and Illustration from University of Arizona, and completing my fine art degree from Arizona State University. I have over 5 years experience in teaching drawing, painting and illustration to adults and children. I have instructed at art stores, private homes, art centers and substitute art teaching for the Mesa School District.
