In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In writing curriculum for my school district, all of our subject areas were written to align with the Common Core curriculum as presented by PA. The PA Common Core is directly related to the national one, so regardless of the student's state, I will be able to teach them. In writing and following the curriculum, I feel I am able to teach students well in this area.
I have an elementary education certificate in the state of PA. I have taught for 25 years in PA in the elementary grades. Specifically, I have taught the subjects of reading, language arts, grammar, phonics, handwriting, science, social studies, math, spelling, writing and vocabulary for elementary students. I have also tutored dozens of students for the school district, in both math and reading subject areas.
I have taught both the printed and the manuscript forms of the Zaner-Bloser method to my students while teaching for the past 25 years. I feel that handwriting is important for many reasons, but is not concentrated upon in today's classrooms.
In teaching first grade, I used the phonic approach to reading instruction. In teaching reading as a reading specialist, I used phonics instruction to instruct the children at the remedial reading level, including using the Fundations and Wilson reading instructional methods. I feel that I am very qualified to teach children in phonics methods how to become better readers.
In tutoring children with my school district, I was able to teach children many skills in order to allow them to study effectively. In teaching, I taught entire classes how to study and use their classroom materials correctly to study for tests and assignments. In teaching reading, I used study skill methods to enable the children to determine the important topics and details, while remembering them for classroom assessments.
