About Joshua

As a licensed teacher, I love to work with students of all ages and feel greatly satisfied when I can help guide a student to earning their own academic success. Graduating summa cum laude and completing my Master's candidacy with Highest Honors, I know first-hand how hard work and determination can not only lead to more opportunities, but can ultimately contribute to a more satisfying and rewarding quality of life.

I specialize in teaching music composition, theory, songwriting, history, aural skills, and study skills. One of the wonderful things about music is that all of the subjects are "cross-curricular", so the skills a student learns in theory can be applied to aural skills; study skills can help music history, and composition can help songwriting. Each lesson I teach is designed to meet three objectives that the student "will be able to" demonstrate afterward. Though challenging, weekly assignments are not overwhelming and are designed to enhance (not impede!) a student's normal homework load.

I'm all about clear, honest, and open communication; I'm a big fan of being transparent. I expect the same from my students. I welcome feedback from students and parents in order to continually improve my craft, and would never bill for a lesson in which the student or parent were not completely satisfied.

Life happens. But even so, please let me know at least 24 hours in advance to an anticipated cancellation. When possible, I'm happy to re-schedule.

In order to ensure a controlled, focused learning environment, I prefer to offer private lessons at my office at Arizona State University. However, I am happy to travel elsewhere or make different accommodations if that is necessary for the student.

I'm excited to hear from you and look forward to helping you succeed!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I am a master's candidate in music composition (with high honors) at Arizona State University. I also hold a bachelor's in music education (summa cum laude) from the University of Maine. I've had pieces performed by ensembles across the United States, including but not limited to orchestras, wind ensembles, choirs, and various chamber groups. I've received composition fellowships to both the Seasons Festival Academy and the Atlantic Music Festival and have had masterclasses with composers from top institutions in the United States: Juilliard, Curtis, and UC Berkeley to name a few.

Ear Training

I teach undergraduate sight singing and ear training at Arizona State University as a teaching assistant. With two years of collegiate teaching experience, I've worked with students at all levels, from incoming freshman with no ear training experience to sophomores who think they're too advanced for instruction.

We teach 18-20th century theory and coordinate the aural skills to follow the theory curriculum. For example, freshman students in my classes learn to identify and sing simple intervals, common chords and chord progressions, rhythms in simple and compound meters, and melodies with secondary dominants. I also teach "movable" as well as "fixed" Do.

General Music

I hold a bachelor's in music education from the University of Maine and am a master's candidate in music composition from Arizona State University.

I've worked with students K-12 and have attending conferences and workshops in general music education. In high school I was a peer tutor and assisted students that needed extra academic reinforcement.

Guitar

I hold a bachelor's in music education from the University of Maine and am a master's candidate in music composition from Arizona State University.

I have played guitar for ten years in a variety of styles: metal, blues, jazz, funk, and folk to name a few. I have played in local bands and competed at rock-offs, at one earning second place for "Best Guitar Player In The State". I was the president of jazz combo in high school, and have even re-finished one of my guitars. In high school I was a peer tutor, and worked with students who needed extra practice with guitar technique.

Music History

I hold a bachelor's (summa cum laude) in music education from the University of Maine. As part of my education, we were required to take two years (four semesters) of music history. I earned "A's" in my four courses, which ranged from the music of antiquity to present day.

I am also a master's candidate in music composition at Arizona State University and have taken several history classes as well, including seminars on beethoven, music from 1900 through the 21st century, and music bibliography. I've earned top marks in those classes as well.

Music Theory

I am a 2nd-year theory and composition Teaching Assistant at ASU as well as a 2nd-year master's candidate in Music Composition. I also hold a BM in Music Education and am a licensed and certified teacher.

Sight Singing

I teach undergraduate Sight Singing at Arizona State University as a Teaching Assistant. With two years of collegiate teaching experience, I've worked with students at all skill levels, from students that are just beginning to use their ears to students who are quite advanced.

I teach "movable" as well as "fixed 'Do'" and have students sing in both melodic and harmonic contexts, often while conducting. We sing melodies in simple / compound meters, primary and secondary dominants, and spontaneous chordal realizations of progressions, to give a brief example.

I hold a Bachelor's (summa cum laude) in Music Education and a Master's in Composition.

Songwriting

I hold a bachelor's (summa cum laude) in music education from the University of Maine. I'm also a master's candidate in music composition from Arizona State University. Throughout my time, at each university, I've become well-acquainted with the art-song tradition and its divergence into today's popular music. My knowledge of music theory, forms, and compositional devices allow me to analyze and explain any concepts in contemporary music, and consequently, I am able to create original music using any of those concepts as well.

Study Skills

I hold a bachelor's (summa cum laude) in music education from the University of Maine. I've taken courses in educational psychology and general psychology, and so I understand how our brains process information. I've been able to use what I've learned and have applied those techniques to my own academic career, and despite averaging 20-22 credits a semester during my undergraduate degree, made the dean's list every semester and graduated with a 3.93 GPA.

At the graduate level, I've maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA despite being a full-time student, working part-time, teaching as a teaching assistant, and holding numerous student positions at the university.

These statements are not made for boasting, but for illustrating the importance of time management - one of many skills important for proper studying and learning habits.
