Arizona State University, Tempe (Chemistry)
Hello, prospective student (and/or parent)! My name is Katy, and I've been delighted to tutor many college and high school students in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area since 2004. I graduated with honors from Arizona State University's Barrett Honors College, with one Bachelor's degree in Marketing, and the other in Chemistry.
My main skill as a tutor might initially sound a little strange: it's listening. So many people do not take the time to understand what a student is confused about, or how a student learns, before starting to work with them. Taking the time to do that preliminary step -- and continuing to listen throughout our time together -- makes lessons more efficient, and makes the experience much more enjoyable.
I love helping people find the joy in learning, or at least find the joy in succeeding. As a Chemistry major, I'm used to being asked "Why would you even do that?" (the implication being that Chemistry is too boring or hard to be enjoyable), and I love being able to share my enthusiasm for that subject -- and others!
As I've been tutoring for ten years, I have long experience with helping people from many backgrounds and age levels learn, including students who speak English as a foreign language. I've run the gamut, from teaching classes in Ethiopia to local social workers, to helping lawyers in DC with their grammar, to tutoring an ESL 16 year old in AP Chemistry. My primary experience has been with college students at ASU and SCC.
I am never condescending -- I'm here to help you learn, not judge you for where you are. Anyone who is looking for a tutor clearly wants to excel, and I firmly believe my purpose is to help you in every way I can. My favorite part of tutoring has been watching my students achieve, and often surpass, their goals. Hello, prospective student (and/or parent)! I am willing to travel more than 20 miles in some cases, but at an increased rate due to travel costs that we can discuss.
Kathryn is super sharp. She picks up a variety of information with ease and skill. I highly recommend her as a tutor.
Kathryn was very helpful through all our sessions. She was very patient and helped me understand the topic that's I was learning. Overall great experience and I would contact her again.
Kathryn helped me write a clear, concise letter of intent (personal statement) for Graduate Studies at ASU. She is patient and kind. She helped me fine-tune my resume and personal statement while still keeping my own style of writing. This means everything for applying for any graduate program. I highly recommend her.
I am working on my MBA and am generally a great student (3.8 GPA) - then came my Applied Business Research and Statistics class - YIKES! After a few weeks of struggling and wondering if I would even be able to pass this class, I desperately started looking for a tutor. I have never used a tutor much less a tutoring service. I came across WyzAnt and quickly found Kathryn and her outstanding reviews! She was available in the time frame that I requested and she is quick to respond. Very well organized and very pleasurable to communicate with.
We spent 3+ hours together for the first meeting and while I am never going to be skilled in Statistics, Kathryn did help me through some difficult assignments and concepts that just don't resonate with me. I will be spending more time with Kathryn over the next two weeks and I am convinced that I would not pass this class without her help.
Thank you Kathryn! You have made a very stressful situation, quite tolerable.
Kathryn is knowledgeable and her teaching style makes the material plain and easy to understand. She took the time to answer any questions I had and made sure I understood before moving on. I enjoyed the experience of learning with her. Thanks Kathryn and thanks WyzAnt for having such a person as a tutor.
Kathryn is a born teacher. Her patience and her technique to make you think about the important sections to draw out the main points, which I welcome.
Feb. 18, 2015. I am grateful for Kathryn's patience, and her ability to convey things on a level that I understand, that is a gift all tutors or individuals simply do not have. I look forward to my tutoring sessions with her because I continue to grow in the knowledge and understanding for each session of my class.
Katie has a way of helping our boys understand aspects of math and science better than anyone else I know. She is able to help them look at things differently, understand concepts better, and feel good about what they are learning. She's simply amazing!
I came to Kathryn completely lost in my Statistics class. In a 2 hour session she was able to successfully teach me how to understand concepts. We also completed all of my assignments. No matter how many mistakes I made, she never made me feel stupid. She is very knowledgeable and helpful! I will definitely be using her again!
Kathryn is brilliant. She teaches by breaking down complexity into simple parts. I appreciate Kathryn repeating and clarifying the concepts that I was having trouble learning. Kathryn generates self confidence, going at my pace, and answering all of my questions. Kathryn simplified the complex subject of statistics. In my case, my graduate statistics class was too fast-paced, and Kathryn helped by reviewing the fundamentals in clear, understandable baby-steps. Kathryn helped me to visually understand, by drawing illustrations which helped make sense and order regarding my confusion. Kathryn's character is pleasant, and reduced my anxiety with the subject manner. For our first appointment, I came completely lost and intimidated by statistics, but now will make a great grade in my class. Kathryn clarifies in one hour, what I am confused about after dozens of hours of Google and YouTube. Our typical session begins with me saying, "Kathryn, I have no idea what this means, and am totally lost", or "what does this math formula mean in English", then our sessions end with "Kathryn, I can't believe you made me understand, you are amazing"!
Kathryn was very patient with my daughter. I like how she was able to come out the day we called. She is quick to respond to text messages and plans ahead.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a cum laude Bachelor's of Science in Marketing through ASU's WP Carey. I did my senior Honors thesis in Marketing, looking into how book cover design influences consumer purchasing.
I have experience in international marketing, strategic marketing management, marketing research (introductory SPSS), servicescape design, sevices marketing, survey and questionnaire design, and leading a focus group.
Marketing is one of my passions, and I would love to share my expertise with you!
I have taken two years of Organic Chemistry and the related labs for Chemistry majors.
I graduated cum laude with an honors degree from the ASU Chemistry program.
I have tutored three individuals previously specifically in Organic Chemistry.
I have taught many students how to learn study skills in the course of teaching other topics. This includes coaching them through how to properly utilize their textbooks, helping them design study schedules, and teaching them how to develop their own study guides prior to tests.
I've done this work with middle school, high school, and undergraduate students, as well as students new to homeschooling.
