About Stephen

I have been tutoring, lecturing, and leading seminars for more than a decade. I have a wealth of experience, having taught conversational English (to both children and adults) in rural Poland, independent studies in social theory, and sociolinguistics at a top-rated research university, and hundreds of lectures, seminars, and discussion-classes on a wide range of social-scientific, philosophical, and linguistic topics, as a full-time professor at one of this country's finest liberal arts colleges.

I gave up my most recent academic job to write full-time; today, that book--which will also serve as my Ph.D. dissertation in Anthropology and Linguistics--is nearing completion, and I find myself missing the classroom, missing students, missing the activity of teaching.

Obviously, my true expertise is in and around the area of the social sciences, social theory, philosophy, and linguistics (I have graduate degrees in the Social Sciences, Linguistics, and Anthropology), but, given my considerable experience and extensive academic background, I am an effective tutor and teacher in any number of areas, including English as a second language, study and research skills, English grammar, vocabulary, reading and writing (from the remedial, or introductory, level focused on the basics of grammar, to college or
graduate level, focused on complex composition, genre, and style).

Whatever specific topic, discipline, or skill is under discussion, and whether I am teaching one student at home or fifty students in a classroom, I really only do one thing; I help students to become better students--more productive readers, researchers, and writers, and, most important, more careful, and more critical, thinkers.

Get in touch; let's see if I have something to offer you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I am ABD in anthropology and linguistics at the University of Chicago (planning on defending within the next several months); I have taught both Anthro and Ling classes at the University of Chicago and at Reed College (as a full-time Assistant Prof., for five years, one of which I was Chair of the Linguistics Dept.). My Ph.D. dissertation is anthro-theory heavy, and my knowledge of the field, its history, its theory and methods are at the highest level.

Polish

Before moving there, I took several summer courses of conversational Polish in Krakow. I also lived in southern Poland for three (3) years total, and studied the language during that time. Also, my wife (of 15 yrs.) is a native speaker of Polish, and we communicate in that language.

Social Studies

1) My undergraduate degree included a dual major in Political Science and Philosophy and a Minor in Sociology. 2) I graduated from the University of Chicago's "MAPSS" (Master of Arts Program in the Social Sciences) in 1997. 3) I am currently ABD in Anthropology and Linguistics at the University of Chicago, and all Chicago Anthro students receive reasonably thorough training in and around sociology and social theory.
