For the past 9 years, I have taught English, Math, and college entrance and grad school entrance exams. I've been fortunate enough to have natural knack for standardized tests, and I've learned how to communicate clear and effective concepts and strategies to students. Hundreds of my students have improved their scores and have gotten the results they have needed for success in their classes or to get in at top schools around the country.

Every student has different learning styles and needs, and I actively seek out how each of my students learn best, and what each student needs to understand to improve their results. With every student, I first learn about them as individuals. I know how so many test-prep and after-school help companies repeat the exact same strategies, expecting everyone to learn the same way, so I make it a point to create individual-specific lessons, explanations, and assignments.

I believe in setting specific goals for every student, beyond just 'get an A' or 'improve by X points.' It's all too easy to get caught up in the end goal and not identify what short-term steps you have to take to get there. One of my main objectives in every lesson is to answer the question: 'What should this student do next to stay on the right path?' Because of this, I always talk with students about a clear game-plan, so that we're never running in circles.

One of my greatest strengths is helping students change how they read texts so that they can turn perplexing texts into straightforward reading. From helping 9th graders get through the PSAT to helping adult learners master the GRE, I've been able to improve performance of all manner of people.

My specialty is the LSAT. After teaching this exam for multiple years, I can honestly say I'm in love with the test. This may be strange to hear, but it's brilliant exam to work at when you start to really understand what they are testing you on! I love seeing the concepts and questions start to 'click' for students, and I've succeeded in getting this to happen a number of times!

I'm not a 'math person' by nature. I studied Philosophy and foreign languages in college. In high school I tested out of a fourth year of math because I disliked it so much, but after teaching high school and college math for several years, I've mastered ways to get students with similar distastes to understand concepts and sometimes even enjoy the subject! These days, I love how teaching even dull topics like special right triangles or completing the square (something that I avoided like the plague as a high schooler) can open up brilliant conversations with students. Because of that I'm always excited to meet with students one-on-one.

I've been living in Arizona for two years now, and love meeting local students. I also teach using Wyzant's online platform, and I can honestly say that it is a fantastic medium for teaching! In fact, it may be the best way to teach because of the simplicity of showing up to a lesson and sharing work. If you are curious about meeting this way, we can meet for a no-commitment first lesson today!

I have worked with three national SAT and ACT prep companies since 2010. Two years ago I started working independently with local students. After being trained by and working for different companies I know both how expensive their services are and how generic their services can be. In working directly with students I am able to craft individual study plans that work for the student. Not only do I have years of experience, but I am also able to provide all study materials as needed.

I've been teaching the LSAT for the past 6 years. I raised my own score from a 167 to a 179, and I believe that anyone dedicated enough can achieve similar goals. Many of my past students agree! This test has an extremely steep learning curve, but there are a number of skills that everyone can learn and develop to excel.

More than I expected, 25 pt improvement

John (Francis) is detailed, is knowledgeable, encouraging AND kind! I haven’t studied for a standardized test EVER! I got through college without doing the ACT or SAT and was skeptical with where I would end up with the LSAT in regard to studying. I am just now a couple weeks away and I feel I have learned so much. Francis not only works with me during our appointment, but reviews my work and assigns homework away from our appointment. He responds fast, is extremely honest with billing and is frank with what I should be doing and not doing. Having gotten a 180, taking numerous administered LSAT himself, and having a personal passion for the test I would recommend him any day. When looking for a tutor I knew I wanted someone who could customize my study schedule (knew prep courses weren’t going to be a fit), I am happy I found that fit and know that he truly cares about my work and me! Do the math, Francis is probably better for your dollar in the long run than a prep course.

Helpful

But my paralegal says she feels a lot better about the logic games section after three lessons. More lessons scheduled and so far it seems to be worth the investment

Knowledgeable

Going over the best books for the LSAT. He gave me a lesson plan for our next meeting as well. Each lesson makes me fill closer to my goal of passing the LSAT with the score that I want and need for the school I plan to attended

Organized

Organized. Concise. And zeroed right in on the problems and gave clear assignments for home study that have been very effective. Excellent tutor!

Very good, careful listener

John did an excellent job dusting off the cob webs of what seemed like an entirety that's gone without studying. I look forward to the next lesson!
