About Rod

I have been teaching only ESL since 1991, most recently for the top-rated international business school: Thunderbird School of Global Management and for Arizona State University. In addition, I've taught for City Colleges of Chicago and Rio Salado College in Phoenix. I've lived and taught internationally in Chile and in Mexico (I'm bilingual English/Spanish). At Thunderbird, we had students from all over the world--China, Japan, India, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Peru, Korea, and many more places. I absolutely loved working with them and sharing cultural insights as part of the learning process. In addition, our Executive Education program hosted private language tutoring for senior business executives of major international companies.

All those years of experience have made me a patient and caring teacher. I always received high marks from students for being able to help them understand this useful but complicated language, English. Each lesson is designed to help you with your individual learning requirements.

I graduated magna cum laude from my undergraduate university and cum laude from graduate school. My master's degree is in journalism, so I work closely on ESL writing. In addition, I have 24 graduate credits in ESL education. Today, I focus exclusively on ESL tutoring.

I look forward to getting to know you better and to discover what topics we need to concentrate on in order for you to achieve your goals. I make the learning process interesting and fun. Please contact me with any questions and to schedule your first lesson. Thanks!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

College professor: I have been teaching ESL to adults since 1991 in this country and internationally. Most recently, I've taught ESL for Arizona State University and for Thunderbird Graduate School of Global Management (top-ranked international business school). In addition, I've taught for Rio Salado College in Arizona and for City Colleges of Chicago. My students have been from countries all around the world--China, Korea, Saudi Arabia, Peru, Italy, Burundi, Morocco, Nigeria, and more. In our lessons, I use a communicative approach, based on natural speech but with a grammar and vocabulary focus, as well. My own accent is neutral Midwest American. With a graduate degree in Journalism, I can help you with your writing, as well.

TOEFL

The TOEFL exam was required of all our incoming international students at the university where I have been teaching English. Our program is focused on improving students' scores in order to meet the required standard. So, as faculty, our lessons are designed to give students practice in the 4 areas tested in TOEFL: Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. In addition, I have personally taken the most current TOEFL practice tests.
