I graduated from the University of Nevada at Reno, where I earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary/Special Education. My main strength is a genuine concern and love for children, along with the ability to relate to them. Out of this concern comes my willingness to bring instruction to their level and to use their strengths. I specialize in teaching first through third grade, along with students who have learning disabilities. Most of my training and experience includes teaching reading, writing and math.

I have 20 years experience teaching kindergarten through sixth grade in northern Nevada. I have been trained in Write from the Beginning, Thinking Maps, Reading Recovery, Balanced Math, and Balanced Literacy. When my students were compared to other students at my school and in the district, my students normally made more progress.

I have 20 years experience teaching kindergarten through sixth grade in northern Nevada, which included students with autism, dyslexia, health impairments, learning and intellectual abilities, and emotional handicaps. I have been trained in Reading Recovery, which teaches embedded phonics. I took a course called Words Your Way, which shows how to teach explicit phonics by using a spelling inventory, word sorts, and games. I have been trained in giving various spelling inventories and assessing students' strengths and weaknesses in phonics.

I am trained in Reading Recovery, which is a 1:1 program designed too get first graders up to grade level. However, I have used the strategies I have learned with children from Kindergarten through fifth grade. I have taken about eighteen credits in teaching reading. I have instilled confidence in students and have had great success with them. For example, one year I had about twenty elementary students and only one was at grade level. Ten to twelve points is the average growth on the computer test and my students made an average of at least twenty points growth in reading, language arts, and math.
