About Lucinda

I love teaching and learning. I've been a teacher in one capacity or another for over 40 years. My education includes, a double major BA in Religious Studies and Theatre and Speech, a MA in Theater Arts and a MEd, in secondary education. When I retired from teaching high school, I began teaching theatre classes at the local community college. During my teaching career I've taught drama, English, communications, acting, introduction to theatre, dramatic structure, and theatre tech. I've also directed many student productions. When I approach a teaching assignment, I like to be creative and match the lessons to the students. The same could be said for my directing style.

Passions other than teaching and theatre are fiction writing, film and reading. I read both nonfiction and fiction. Because of my theatre background, I'm adept at literary and character analysis. Though I haven't pursued an advanced degree in Religion, I continue to be interested in the subject.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Film

I grew up in a family that loved movies. We'd watch and discuss them together. My father taught us to ask questions about the motivations of the characters, analyze the plots and even think about the way the story was told. For this reason, Turner Classic Movies is one of my favorite channels.

I added theatre and speech as a second major to my BA degree, partly because I love movies and dramatic structure. I took playwrighting classes as part of my Master's work in theatre, and I was the student assistant of the Film instructor at Portland State.

As a teacher I've taught dramatic structure at the college level and a course called "The Story of Movies," to middle and high school students. This course, created by The Film Institute, IBM and Turner Classic Movies, helps students learn about the significance of camera angles, the symbolic visual language of film and how to read the small nuances in an actor's performance by paying attention to their body language and facial expressions.

I may not have an official degree in movie making, but I watch all the special features on DVD's and listen to film makers talk about their process. I also watch "Inside the Actor's Studio", and two of my favorite apps on my iPhone are the TCM app and Internet Movie Database.

Watching and analyzing movies is a much loved hobby of mine.

Public Speaking

I have a minor in Speech as part of my Theatre and Speech degree. As a high school English teacher, I had to teach public speaking. As a drama teacher I helped students prepare for the Shakespeare competition. When I began teaching part-time at the local community college, I was asked to teach the introductory communication class, Essentials of Communication. I taught that class for three years in both eight week and sixteen week formats. While the class was about all types of communication, from interpersonal to working in groups on the job, it did have a section on public speaking. I required four speeches in my eight week classes and five speeches in the sixteen week classes. Public speaking is much more than researching and organizing your speech. Body language and voice also play a big part in giving the presentation. Proper use of visuals is also important. With my background in theatre I was able to teach my students how to appear as if they looked relaxed, even when they weren't, which helped them give a more effective speech.

Religion

My first major in my BA is Religious Studies. I've maintained an interest in this subject and read many non-fiction books on related topics. My education was concentrated on Christianity and Judaism, however, I did take one course on religions of the world and I've studied a little bit about Buddhism, Tao and Hinduism.

Study Skills

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies and Theatre and Speech, a Master of Arts degree in Theater Arts, and a Master of Arts in Education. As a high school teacher, I tutored students in preparation for the AIMS tests, which they had to pass to graduate from high school. At present, I teach theatre classes part-time at the local community college. I'm good at identifying key concepts within reading materials, and I'm also skilled in asking key questions and thinking critically about the material I'm studying. Because of all my educational, and teaching background, I'll be able to help students learn skills that will help them succeed in any class they are taking.

Theatre

After receiving a BA from Graceland University in 1979, I added a second major, Theatre and Speech. I finished that degree in 1981. In 1986, I received a MA in Theater Arts from Portland State University. I've worked in semi-professional, community and educational theaters as an actor, stage manager, costume and set construction crews and as a director. I've taught drama at Portland and Vancouver Parks and Recreation departments, at two Public high schools and now I teach part-time at the local community college. I've taught acting, introduction to theatre, dramatic structure, stage craft and theatre workshop, which means I've directed college productions. In all I've been involved in theatre on and off for 35 years.
