After working as a civil engineer for ten years, I realized my true calling was teaching and went back to take education classes. I first taught middle school math, life science and earth science for eight years. I then went on to teach lab sciences in high school for eight years. The courses I have taught in high school include biology, AP biology, chemistry, earth science and environmental science.
Teaching is my calling, and tutoring is the best of teaching. I know how difficult it is for teachers to reach each student in a large classroom, and I want to support that effort on a personal level. As an experienced teacher in large classes, the most frustrating part has always been to not have enough time to give individual instructional help. Tutoring is an extremely rewarding process that allows me to connect with a student, learn their particular learning style, and tailor lessons that support their classroom learning and targets specific areas of need. My favorite part of teaching is the aha! moment when a complex topic is finally understood.
Having been an engineer, I can easily come up with examples of "how will I use this?". My years of classroom experience have given me knowledge of many different learning styles, so I can find just the right way to help you understand difficult concepts. I am good at creating practice problems and examples to allow you to see a problem from every angle.
I look forward to hearing from you to discuss how I can help you be the best student you can be. Watch your grades and scores soar, along with your confidence! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am currently privately tutoring four students in algebra and prealgebra. I taught middle school for eight years, so understand that age group very well. My math ability is fine as I have an engineering degree from Purdue.
I have taught all levels of biology for sixteen years. This includes AP Biology (students were successful on AP exam), high school honors and on-level biology and middle school life science. This is my core area. I recently prepared a student for the Biology SAT subject exam.
Taught high school chemistry and honors chemistry for several years. Used chemistry in other fields taught, such as environmental science, AP Biology and earth science.
Teacher of all levels of biology, including AP Biology for several years. Students were successful on AP exam. Also taught entry level high school biology and honors biology, as well as middle school life science.
