About Mark

Nobody wants to see a tutor. I certainly didn't when I was in high school. But the tutors I worked with didn't just help me do better on a test. They taught me how to adapt to academic challenges, and they showed me new approaches to problem-solving. Through this they helped me discover strengths I never knew I had.
As a history tutor, my mission is to make the foreign familiar, to show how that the distant past dictates both today and tomorrow, and why this matters to you. I did this for seven years as an instructor of history and humanities at the University of Arizona, and I look forward to sharing my experience, knowledge, and approaches with you. My goal is that you'll come away from our work together with greater confidence, more intellectual curiosity, and the skills you need to achieve success.

I am a two-time recipient of the Federal FLAS (Foreign Language Area Studies) Grant for studying Intermediate and Advanced Arabic at the American University of Cairo.

I hold my B.A. in European Studies from Vanderbilt University, an M.A. in American Studies from the University of Mississippi, and an M.A. in Middle Eastern & North African Studies from the University of Arizona where I am currently a Ph.D. candidate in the same field. My focus was and is history in all of these interdisciplinary degrees. My other research interests include: the humanities, religion, geography, and the arts. I also have extensive experience in writing, editing, and composition and can help you significantly improve your writing skills.

I welcome the opportunity to meet with you to discuss how we can best work together and achieve your scholastic goals.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
