About Lauren

I have been teaching for the past 4 years and I am currently a Latin and Classical History teacher for the 5th and 6th grade in a charter school in the Scottsdale area. I have experience teaching all levels, including: 5th grade reading, writing, world history, and Latin; 6th grade, reading writing, Classical history, and Latin; 8th Grade World History; 11th Grade Latin; and Undergraduate courses in Latin, Archaeology, and Classical History.

I have 3 years' experience tutoring and have tutored students in the following disciplines: preparation for the GRE, AP Latin, AP World History, Classics, Spanish, ESL, Ancient Greek

I am a practicing archaeologist and have spent most of my summers for the past 8 years excavating in either Rome, Greece (the Peloponnese), and Ecuador.

While I did not receive my degree in Spanish, I grew up in a Spanish speaking household and have been fluent in the language my entire life. I have tutored both English and Spanish students and helped them learn a second language.

As much as I love my major and my job as a teacher, I also love being active and having hobbies outside of work.

Traveling opens the mind to new cultures and teaches you life lessons that are not so easily obtained inside a classroom. I travel as much as possible in order to meet new people, experience new cultures, and learn more about the human experience.

I am very involved in sports and I coach volleyball for my school, play golf whenever I can, find new places to go on a hike, and cheer on the Denver Broncos every season.

I believe music is medicine for the soul and have been playing the flute and piano since I was in 5th grade. I loved football and music so much that I joined the Golden Buffalo Marching Band while I attended CU Boulder.

I have been excavating in Rome, Italy every summer since 2008. I started as a student and now I am working as an Assistant to the Registrar. I was responsible for the cleaning, cataloguing, and analyzing the artifacts our team pulled from the site. I used our database to enter artifact descriptions and analyses. I also supervised the undergraduate and graduate students and trained them the proper practices of artifact preservation.

I was a 5th and 6th grade elementary teacher for 2 years. During that time, I taught a variety of subjects, including grammar and writing. Furthermore, grammar is incredibly important for a Classical historian and it is required that I use proper grammar at all times.

I have my MA in Classical Art and Archaeology. I am currently teaching Classics and Latin at BASIS here in Scottsdale. I also taught Classics courses as a TA while I was obtaining my MA.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have taught American History for 2 years in the Charter School system. I also studied American History in college as a minor to my BA in Classics.

Archaeology

I have my MA in Classical Art and Archaeology. I have spent almost every summer since 2008 excavating in Rome, Greece, and Ecuador. While onsite, I educate undergrads on the proper practices of stratigraphic excavation. I have given several lectures for the Colorado Archaeological society on my finds.

Classics

I obtained both my BA and MA in Classics from the University of Colorado at Boulder. I have been working in the Classical field since I graduated with my MA in 2012. I have worked as a professional consultant at a museum in Colorado for the traveling 'A Day in Pompeii' exhibit. I have worked as an archaeologist in Rome since 2008 and I also worked in Greece in 2015. I am currently teaching Latin and Classics at BASIS Schools in Scottsdale, AZ.

Flute

I have been playing the flute for the past 18 years. I participated in concert and marching band from 5th to 12th grade in school. I was also a part of the Golden Buffalo Marching Band for 6 years at the University of Colorado at Boulder while I obtained my BA and MA. I am still active in the music community and attempt to play my flute on a daily basis. I can help with fingering, embouchure, and reading music.

Grammar

I taught the 5th and 6th grades for two years. While teaching elementary, I was required to teach a variety of subjects, including grammar. Having knowledge in the Latin and Spanish languages also helps with the understanding of English grammar. I have tutored students in grammar for two years, previously.

Latin

I received my BA and MA in Latin and Classics from the University of Colorado at Boulder. I am currently a Latin teacher in Secondary Education here in Scottsdale. I have been tutoring students in Latin since 2010 and have extensive experience with students from the 5th grade through undergraduates.

I am also an archaeologist and spend most of my summers excavating in Rome. While on site, I am able to actively use my Latin knowledge by translating any epigraphy found on site.

Piano

I have been playing the piano for the past 12 years and actively participated in concert bands from 5th grade until I graduated college. I am still active in the music community and I have tutored students for the past 2 years on the piano before I moved to Arizona (which was in July). I can not only help with learning how to play the piano but also with music and music theory.

Spanish

I grew up speaking Spanish with my family. I took multiple courses in Spanish literature and phonetics in college. I have tutored both adults and kids in Spanish for several years and I have helped ESL Adult learners with acquiring the English language.

World History

I received by BA in Classics and, thus, have studied antiquity since 2006. I taught different eras, spanning from Antiquity to Early American history, to the 5th, 6th, and 8th grades for three years. I excavated at an Incan site in Ecuador and studied the Early American civilizations in detail. While I specialize in Classical history, I am a historian, and I have the ability to analyze, research, critically think about, and teach history. I tutored for two years in world history to students in elementary through high school.
