I am a certified second grade teacher in Scottsdale, Arizona. This is my fourth year teaching, but I have been working with children of all ages for over 15 years. Therefore, I feel comfortable working with children of all ages. My strengths obviously lie in elementary education subjects. However, I am comfortable teaching study skills, along with organizational skills as well.
Before teaching, I worked in the arts field. Therefore, I have a great deal of creativity and flexibility. In other words, I am able to think quickly on my feet and change directions with students if needed. I love creating limericks and sayings to help students remember letter sounds, steps, etc. I find that if the students can turn learning into something fun, they are more likely to retain it for future learning.
I would love to help your students succeed in school. I have personally seen students struggling in a variety of subjects and it breaks my heart. School should be a place that students love to come to, not a place where they are frustrated or worried about keeping up with his/her peers. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been teaching phonics for four years. In addition, I have taken courses in college specifically focused on phonics. I have used the Action Reading, along with the Superkids programs.
I attended school to become certified in K-8 studies. I took both educator's tests (professional knowledge and content knowledge) to demonstrate mastery. I have also been teaching elementary aged students for four years.
Having taught kindergarten for two years, handwriting was a major part of our curriculum. Therefore, I am very confident in my ability to properly teach the formation, size, slant, spacing of letters. I have used the Superkids program, which uses ice cream colored lines to demonstrate how to correctly form each letter.
I completed courses in my teacher preparation program that were specifically phonics based. I have now been teaching phonics for four years. On my teaching certificate, I have fulfilled the phonics requirements. In addition, I have used the Action Reading, along with the Superkids programs.
I currently teach at a private Catholic School where religion is taught every day. In addition, I have been a very active Catholic for 10+ years.
I received my Bachelors of Arts in Theater from Arizona State University. In addition, I have spent many summers directing and teaching theater to kids aged 8 - 15. I also direct my school's annual spring musical.
